Shorter softball player Kayla Cooper has been named the NCCAA Student-Athlete of the Week, the organization announced on Tuesday.

Cooper, a junior outfielder from McDonough, is coming off a tremendous week for the Lady Hawks. Shorter went 4-0 during the week, sweeping doubleheaders at Gulf South Conference rivals Christian Brothers and Delta State.

Cooper led the charge for the Lady Hawks, going 9-for-13 over the week (.692 BA) while scoring seven runs and accounting for eight RBIs while adding a pair of home runs.

“Kayla has done a fantastic job for us as our leadoff and center fielder, which is no easy task given that she had to replace a first team All-American in Charlsie Broome,” said Thomas.

“I cannot remember any player in my coaching tenure to turn in the offensive numbers that Kayla did this past week.

“Along with her stolen bases, her performance was amazing. She has adjusted to Shorter softball very well.”

For the season Cooper leads the Lady Hawks in several categories, including slugging percentage (1.024), runs scored (16), hits (21), RBIs (18), doubles (seven), home runs (five) and stolen bases (eight).
