Fighting through some nasty weather — and fighting against a talented field of players — the Shorter women’s golf team came away with a second-place finish at the Rome News-Tribune Invitational at Coosa Country Club.

Lee University won the two-day event, finishing 18 shots ahead of the runner-up Lady Hawks.

Berry College, the tournament’s host school, finished sixth.

The tournament, which was played amid cold temperatures among other unfavorable weather conditions, featured a field of 75 players representing a total of 12 schools.

Shorter’s Maria Bengtsson, a sophomore from Sweden, earned a share of third place overall by finishing at 10-over-par.

Lee was fueled by the performance of the tourney’s individual champion, Courtney Shelton, who carded a 3-over-par 147 (73-74). Kaylon King of Trevecca Nazarene was second with a two-day 153 (78-75).

For Shorter, Isabella Baldacci joined Bengtsson among the Top-10 by taking eighth place, finishing at 12-over.

Other scores for the Lady Hawks were: Rachel Butler 78-82-160 (+16) in 16th; Claudia Orrantia 77-86-163 (+19) in 20th, and Pauline Schopp 80-86-166 (+22) in 29th.

Lee won the title with scores of 305-310-615. Shorter shot 310-323-633.

The Lady Hawks entered a pair of golfers as unattached competitors: Amanda Schwartz shot 84-84-168 (+24) and Alyson Hicks (185).

Kaylon King of Trevecca Nazarene was second after tallying a 153 (78-75).

Lee posted the lowest team score both days. The University of the Cumberlands placed third with a 636, three strokes behind Shorter. Lindsey Wilson was fourth (643), and Cumberlands University (648) rounded out the top five.

Berry was the top finisher among the three competing NCAA Division III teams in the field.

Nikki Cline led the lady Vikings with a 14th place finish (77-82-159).

Other Berry scoring included Lacey Sheppard 82-79-161 (tied for 18th); Nicole Wood 85-84-169 (36th); Chelsea Hoag 85-86-171 (41st); and Lauren Buschhorn 95-101—196 (tied for 61st).

The Lady Vikings are back in action on March 15 when they open play in the three-day Jekyll Island Intercollegiate event.

Shorter’s next action is on March 17, when the Lady Hawks travel to Achasta Golf Course in Dahlonega to play North Georgia.
