Suspect shot at clerks in armed robbery

Rome Police are looking for a man that robbed a South Rome liquor store Tuesday night and opened fire on two clerks.

According to officer Aaron Thacker:

A black male entered Blue Box Beverage, 33 E. Main St., at approximately 9:30 p.m. and demanded money from the register.

The suspect then got behind the counter and began grabbing money from the register when one of the two clerks came up behind him and struck him in the arm with a golf club.

The suspect jumped back over the counter and fired three shots towards the clerks as he began to flee, missing both of them.

The suspect ran out into the parking lot and one of the clerks took a firearm and ran after the suspect, shooting at him twice before he was out of sight.

It was unknown whether the suspect was shot or not but both clerks were unharmed.

The suspect did get away with money from the register but it is unknown exactly how much was missing Tuesday night. The incident has been turned over to investigators.

I don't agree with the employee going outside and firing a few rounds carelessly. That's exactly how innocent bystanders of all ages, from 1 to 100, are killed daily.

Too bad the employee didn't have his gun handy instead of the golf club. If he was able to get up close enough to take a swing, he would also have been close enough to give the crook a point blank piece of lead into his sorry cadaver.

i dont believe some of the comments. the man came into their business, banished a gun demanding their money, when they attempted to stop him from taking their money he shot at them, they then shot back at him. I really cant understand where anyone would think they dont have the right to protect themselves and their property when someone shoots at them.

i may be able to understand it if the robber hadnt not only threatened them with a gun but also fired at them. and we wonder why the country in in the shape it is today. criminals have more rights than victims.

You are condoning killing another human being over a few dollars. This is not some old western movie where Mr. Patel said, "I think I'll just wing him". Stealing is wrong. As a matter of fact it's a sin. Have you never had a kid or a friend or a relative that made a mistake? Have you killed? Have you seen person who has been killed even in battle? Do you realize what you said?

I'm understanding that when this man decided to take a deadly weapon with him to "take a few dollars" he had a reason for taking the gun. What reasons could he have had to carry a gun with him while "taking a few dollars" ? The only reasonable explanation is "if someone tries to stop me from 'taking a few dollars' I will kill them."

Then, when someone tries to stop him from "taking a few dollars" he uses the deadly weapon and shoots at the person who had the gall to interfere with his inalienable right to take the property of others.

Long story short, someone tries to kill you for protecting your property, then runs as to avoid the consequences of their actions, they do not get a free pass.

I only have one speck of sympathy for the criminal. He sees the government taking "a few dollars" at the point of a gun on a daily basis, and it's legal. I can understand his belief that he was doing nothing more than cutting out the middle man. Saves the post office the trouble of delivering Mr. Patel's money to the criminal in the form of welfare.

In all honesty, Trelicious is probably correct about the financial straits of this would-be killer. I'm sure that the vast majority of people robbing liquor stores for booze/drug money are on every type of government assistance programs that are out there. Otherwise, they'd be like other everyday regular employed people and walk in and pay cash.

I wonder if there's some stats out there? One thing's for sure, the liberals would try to explain it in more ways than Baskin Robbins has ice cream flavors.

I really hope Mr. Patel does not think it is wise to follow an armed man into the street and fire his own gun at him. Once those bullets leave the barrel you cannot call them back- and some kid or some passerby could be hit and then end up owning the Blue Box after legal proceedings. I hope the police counseled Mr. Patel about that. He has the right to defend himself and his business but pursuing and firing upon a fleeing person outside the business is foolish.

I'm not condoning the robbery at all, I hope he gets cought but the clerk should get charged for firing a weapon outside his store, the clerk could of injured or worse killed an innocent bystander, the clerk was no longer being threatened

The man was running away with Mr. Patel's money . I think he had ever right to try and stop him .I hope he goes and gets some target practice .
