As Santa and his reindeer fly back home to the North Pole this morning, something not quite as merry could be moving into the Floyd County area.

While the warmth of Christmas cheer will be abundant, the weather outside will indeed be frightful as isolated thunderstorms are

expected to develop in the area tonight, according to the National Weather Service.

A dense and heavy fog will blanket Rome this morning until about 9 a.m. The drizzly rain should set in around noon and could carry winds up to 10 mph, the NWS advised. The high will be near 58 and rainfall amounts could be from half to three-quarters of an inch.

Christmas night will possibly come with thunderstorms, some of which could become severe. Southeast winds will kick up to 10 to 15 mph, with some gusts possibly reaching 30 mph. The low temperature will be 50 degrees.

Floyd County Emergency Management Agency Director Scotty Hancock said some isolated tornadoes are also expected, but they

should be south and west of Rome.

“From what (the National Weather Service is) telling me, the storm is slowing down and they’re expecting it be a little bit south of us,” he said. “The more damaging weather is moving to south of Rome,” adding that there was a slight to moderate risk of tornadoes, but that will mainly affect Alabama.

“Were hoping it stays south,” he said..

Here’s a look at the rest of the weather for the week:
