A man was taken to the hospital Wednesday evening when a vehicle hit him while he was riding a bicycle across Shorter Avenue.

According to Rome Police officer Zachary Colvin:

A tan GMC Yukon SUV driven by Roxie Morris of Rome turned left out of Citizens First Bank, 800 Shorter Ave., into the middle turn lane to go eastbound.

The Yukon then collided with Victor Hugo Depaz, 21, of 6 Ellison St., who was on a bicycle in the turn lane and moving westbound waiting to get across the road.

Depaz was taken to Floyd Medical Center with a broken leg. Morris was cited for improper use of central turn lane.

In some cities they have pictorial “no jaywalking” signs, particularly between crosswalks. Usually at crosswalks vehicles yield to pedestrians, but some are marked the opposite – pedestrians yield to vehicles. Maybe Rome should put up some “no jaywalking” signs and the police could enforce it. Shorter would be a very good source of revenue. As far as cyclists are concerned, they do need to watch out for the motorist who is not paying attention.

I think we all know that Rome isn't going to do anything. People are left to hang themselves around here so that the revenuers in blue can swoop in with the bill, I mean ticket. Unfortunately, the cost of such signs will be more that this town can handle. Why spend money on signs that will take away from revenue?

I don't remember the last time I traveled Shorter Ave. between Lowe's and Floyd Medical Center and did not see someone jaywalk or cross five lanes on a bicycle. The jaywalkers usually have two or three small children in tow. A little common sense would go a long way and be lawful also.

this is why people should be able to ride bikes on the sidewalk.

No, this is why motorists need to be more aware of cyclists.

@ roastedroman:

No, this is why cyclists need to be more aware of motorists.

Think about it, which one of the two went to the hospital with a broken leg? Which of the two is more vulnerable to serious injury when this happens? When you were a child, did your parents tell you to be careful & watch out for motorist, or did they say, ride any way you'd like, we will contact all motorist in the city & tell them to watch out for you?

There are more motorist on the roads than there are cyclist, therefore, the cyclist bares all the responsibility for his/her safety when riding on two wheels with no motor, now traction control, no horn, etc... A bicycle cannot & should not be put into the same realm as a vehicle. When you ride a bicycle in the street where there are hundreds of motorist moving at speeds from 35 to 55 mph, then you ride that bicycle with them at your own risk.

No, roastedroman, this is why individuals who choose to dart across Shorter Avenue, whether on foot or bicycle, need to think about what they're doing, and then decide if it is a smart decision. I drive this road daily and am absolutely amazed at how many people I see risking their lives, and their children's, by walking/running/biking across 5 lanes at the most ridiculous times of day-rush hour, to be specific.

Right on Breamer. They had an article the other day where the guy got hit on a sidewalk and they charged him, but at least he didnt get a broken leg. If we had bike lanes it'd be one thing, but cyclists are much safer on the sidewalk than on the Road with Coosa and West Rome drivers.
