The festivities run Tuesday through Saturday at the fairgrounds on Martin Luther King Jr. Drive in Rome.
There is a 50-percent chance showers will greet the opening of “Fall’s Finest Festival” on Tuesday. Minimal chances for showers are in the forecast for most of the rest of the week, according to the National Weather Service:
"It depends on how bad the weather is as to whether or not the rides run or not,” Kerce said. “If it’s a light sprinkle, it’s normally not a problem. If it’s a heavy rain, yes it does put a damper on the fair.”
The Fair Association uses proceeds from the fair for a variety of activities in the community. The lion’s share of the funds are used to support the Exchange Club Family Resource Center, which works to prevent child abuse in the community.
Members of the Exchange Club were busy all over the fairgrounds Sunday. Some were helping people get photographs entered in the competition and installed in the right location inside one of the community buildings.
Others were helping people enter canned goods in another competition. Scotty Hightower and his family were back from Jasper, with pickled peppers.
“I’ve got the check from (winning) last year sitting outside in the truck,” Hightower said. “It’s not about the money, it’s about getting that first-place ribbon.”
Teenagers from a number of clubs and community organizations were busy putting up displays designed to enhance awareness of their groups as thousands of Northwest Georgians are expected to pour through the exhibition buildings on the fairgrounds this week.
The weather will undoubtedly play a key role in determining how many people get the messages.
