Albor wins The Clocktower Classic Handcycling event
Clocktower Classic Criterium
Alejandro Albor stormed through Northwest Georgia this week, winning his own version of the “Triple Crown” during the Clocktower Classic.
Albor came from behind to edge Cedartown’s Krige Schabort in Friday’s hand-cycling race in downtown Rome to claim his third win of the event.
Albor, who competed in Beijing Paralympics last year, finished a split second ahead of Schabort.
The victory puncuated a victorious week for Albor, who set the pace in Wednesday’s time trial and then won Thursday’s 48-km race at the Rocky Mountain Recreation Center.
In Friday’s race — the final stage of a three-part series — Albor trailed Schabort for virtually the entire race, but used a last-second surge to slip past Schabort and cross the line.
Albor was one of three cyclists in this week’s Classic who competed in Beijing last year. The other two were Matt Updike and Oz Sanchez.
Friday’s event drew a large crowd to downtown Rome, and many roared for the local representatives, Schabort and Rome resident Mike Sprouse.
The hand-cycling event was followed by a Pro 1-2-3 race.
The top three finishers were Harrison Swift (of Aaron Cycling), Patrick Alison (TNT) and Greg Gilbert (Aaron).
