Carmen Nicole Shirey and Michael Scott Wood, both of Rome, were married at 5 p.m., Saturday, July 7, 2012 in Barnwell Chapel at Berry College in Rome.

The bride is the daughter of Don Shirey Jr. of Nashville and Joy Shirey of Rome. She is the granddaughter of the late Don Shirey Sr. and Shirley Shirey of Ft. Payne, Ala., and Rev. Max and Gaynell Tucker of Rome.

The groom is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Mike Wood of Buford. He is the grandson of the late James Donald Wood and Betty Wood of Lilburn, and Mr. and Mrs. Bruce Woodlief of Buford.

Pastor Mitch Jolly of Rome performed the ceremony. The bride was given in marriage by her parents.

A program of wedding music was provided. Selections included the Irish hymn “Be thou My Vision,” “Love Never Fails,” “Irish Bridal March,” “When I Say I Do” and “How Sweet It Is.”

Bridesmaids were Allison Patnode, sister of the bride, Lindsey Shirey, sister of the bride, and Brittany Bolemon, sister of the groom. The bridesmaids wore knee-length pink chiffon dresses. They carried bouquets, made by the bride, of pink calla lilies and wildflowers wrapped with yellow burlap and lace. Leanna Wood was the flower girl.

The groomsmen were Mike Wood, father of the groom, Britt Bolemon, brother-in-law of the groom and Brandon Reece. The groomsmen wore khaki suits with pink vests and ties to match. The groom wore a khaki suit with an ivory vest and tie. The men also wore pink feathered boutonnières with yellow burlap and wildflowers made by the bride. Tyler, Carson, and Sawyer Bolemon, nephews of the groom, were the ring bearers and carried the rings down the aisle on hand-stitched pillows.

The bride wore a strapless ivory gown of luminous taffeta with a sweetheart neckline. The mermaid silhouette was layered and wrapped around the bodice to the ruffled flowered skirt that flowed to the Tiffany train. Accessories included an ivory veil, pearl earrings and necklace, and her great-grandmothers pearl bracelet. The bride carried a hand-made bouquet of miniature cymbidium orchids, calla lilies, and wildflowers.

During the ceremony, the bride signed to the song “When I Say I Do” as a surprise to the groom. The father of the groom read an Irish wedding blessing over the couple, and Rev. Max Tucker gave a special wedding prayer. The couple exchanged traditional and handwritten vows. They also tied a lover’s knot to symbolize their union.

Following the ceremony, a reception was held at the Rome Area History Museum. Refreshments included a wedding cake made of vanilla and cream cheese cupcakes decorated with pink and white sugar flowers made by the bride’s sister, Allison, and a double-chocolate grooms cake.

The evening before the wedding, the groom’s parents hosted a rehearsal dinner for family and out-of-town guests at the Claremont House in Rome.

Other pre-nuptial parties included a family engagement party hosted by Dawn, Sam, and Dusca Tucker, a Home and Garden shower hosted by Bruce and Patty Hunter, David and Nancy Hunter, and Jimmy and Hollye Smith, a dinner party given by the Special Education Department at Model High School, and a lingerie shower given by Jaclyn Giles.

After a wedding trip to Ireland, the couple will reside in Rome.
