Jamina Hughes is planning to honor the memory of her late mother Johnette Regina Elkins by opening a community grocery store to citizens of North Rome.

Hughes has obtained a city business license for JR Sav-A-Lot, to be located at 1107-B Calhoun Ave. She has prior retail experience with Dollar General and the Infant Nutrition program n Atlanta.

Elkins was killed in a wreck on Shorter Avenue in 2011. “She always talked positive and I just said I needed to give JR Sav-A-Lot a try,” Hughes said. “She always liked helping people.”

Hughes hopes to open before the first of December. Groceries will be the focus for the store. “North Rome hasn’t had a real grocery store here and it’s kind of far to get to others,” Hughes said. “There are a lot of older people in the community that can’t really get out and I won’t be so far for them. Other places are very expensive so I’m going to try to keep everything very reasonable.”
