A Chickamauga police officer was shot while responding to a 911 call that reported a domestic dispute Thursday evening.

Sgt. Ira Taylor, a law enforcement veteran of 27 years, was shot by Michael Anthony Brooks, a 24-year-old believed to be from Lindale, Calif.

A “rolling domestic” situation began at the Kangaroo gas station on U.S. 27. in Chickamauga and officers responded and pulled the vehicle over in the 100 block of Wilder Road, according to Chickamauga police chief Micheal Haney.

“The officer is fine. He appeared to have a contact wound above the knee,” Haney said.

The 49-year-old officer has been released from Erlanger at Hutcheson hospital in Fort Oglethorpe. He has been with the Chickamauga Police Department for four years.

Two men stopped upon seeing the situation with Brooks and his passengers. One of the men is a volunteer firefighter and made a second call to 911 at the urging of Brooks’ 26-year-old female passenger.

Two officers responded to the call at the gas station and were directed to the Wilder Road location by 911.

Brooks was then questioned by officers outside of his Jeep, which had California license plates.

The female passenger is from Atlanta and a 55-year-old male from Johnstown, Penn., possibly her father, were passengers in Brooks’ vehicle and are being interviewed at the Walker County Sheriff’s Office after the incident. Deputies are determining the nature of the disturbance calls.

Brooks became combative and knocked the tazer away from one of the officers.
