Rome City Manager John Bennett is slated to update his board tonight on repairs to Maddox Track.

The track at Barron Stadium has been closed to the public since late August, when Rome Floyd Parks and Recreation officials noticed the surface eroding.

RFPRA Executive Director Richard Garland said the rubber granules in the top coating were breaking down and essentially melting onto runners’ shoes. The track, installed in the fall of 2011, has an eight-year warranty.

The contractor, Brasfield & Gorrie, will resurface the track using a different supplier for the granular rubber. Officials had been hoping the work would be done by the end of October.

Commissioners also plan to issue a proclamation in honor of World Alzheimer’s Day, which is Sept. 21. The international awareness campaign has been a staple since 1994.

The Rome City Commission caucuses at 5 p.m. and starts it regular session at 6:30 p.m. in City Hall, 601 Broad St. Both meetings are open to the public.

Commissioners will get an update about a proposed corridor improvement plan at their caucus.

The city’s redevelopment committee and planning officials have been working with a focus group on ways to ensure the main routes in Rome are safe, functional and attractive.

Officials are mulling the establishment of Corridor Focus events — city-assisted cleanups similar to the Neighborhood Focus weeks that target various areas. An ordinance with landscaping requirements and building design standards also is under consideration.

Commissioners also will have first readings on two rezoning requests. One would allow a house at the corner of East Sixth Street and Second Avenue to be remodeled for use as an office. The other would fold a tiny vacant tract on West 13th Street into a neighboring residential parcel.

Public hearings and final actions will be at the board’s Sept. 4 meeting.
