A Rome man was in jail Thursday night after he was accused of having an altercation with a Rome Water Department employee, according to Rome police reports.

According to the reports:

Michael Valentino Woods, 54, of 210 Waddell St., was charged with misdemeanor interference with government property, theft by taking and simple battery.

Woods was $100 past due on his water bill when a city water department employee attempted to put a lock on his water meter Tuesday.

Woods allegedly argued with the employee before slapping him in the face. As the employee retreated to his Rome Water Department truck, Woods is accused of throwing a large brick at the employee that hit the inside panel of the driver side door of the truck, cracking the panel and causing damage to the handle.

The employee left and called police.

Woods is accused of intentionally taking a Sensus meter reader valued at approximately $300, which was dropped by the employee during the incident.

Woods remained in jail on $3,900 bond.
