The funds will be used to purchase glucose-testing meters and strips, lancets, and insulin syringes for patients of the clinic, which provides free primary medical care to low income, uninsured patients.
“As we complete our tenth year in existence in Rome, the Diabetes Council is pleased to provide the Free Clinic with this grant,” said Hal Storey, council chairman. “We are certain it will enable their patients with diabetes to receive the supplies they need to control their diabetes, which is critical to avoiding complications. We are glad we can continue to fulfill our mission by making a difference in their lives.”
The mission of the Diabetes Council is to make a difference in the lives of all those affected by and at risk for diabetes in Northwest Georgia by funding education, awareness and assistance initiatives, according to Storey. Past grants have funded diabetes initiatives at Mercy Senior Care, The Boys and Girls Club of Rome and the American Diabetes Association Research Foundation. The Council raises money through individual donations, corporate-sponsored denim/casual days and the Walk to Cure Diabetes.
