Across three local sites this week, the Etowah River had an average of 55.6 colony forming units of bacteria per 100 milliliters, below the federal Environmental Protection Agency “safe level” of 126 cfu/100ml. The 55.6 is based on a geometric mean, not a true average of the three sites.

At U.S. 411 in Bartow County, levels were 45.7 cfu/100ml; at the Rome bypass and Grizzard Park, levels were 48.7; and at Second Avenue in Rome levels were at 77.1.

Last week the average for all three sites was 89.5 cfu/100ml.
