The Berry College men’s golf team opened the season with a strong third place finish at the Rhodes College Men’s Fall Classic. Tuesday’s round was canceled because of rain.

Berry shot a 295, 14 shots behind champion Southwestern. The Vikings, however, placed just one stroke behind runnerup Emory’s 294. Mary Hardin Baylor finished fourth at 296.

Jason Terranova (pictured) led the Vikings with a one-under par 71. He tied for fifth place. Jordan Cowart was the medalist after shooting a 65 at the Tunica National Golf Course.

For Berry, Tommy McCloskey fired a 73 and tied for 13th. Alex Elmore tied for 29th with his 75. Ty Hampel carded a 76 and was 35th. John Hall rounded out the Viking scoring with an 83 and tied for 81st.

The Vikings return to action at the Hampden-Sydney Invitational on Sept. 24.

Lady Vikings take 11th at D3 Classic

Nikki Cline shot an 86 on Monday to lead Berry College to an 11th place finish at the D3 Classic. Cline’s two-day score of 173 earned her a tie for 29th place at the event.

The Univ. of St. Thomas (328-327—655) won the team championship by one stroke over host Carleton College (330-326-—656). Molly Erickson of St. Olaf College (71-75—146) earned medalist honors. Kelsey Moede of Carleton was eight shots off the pace and placed second.

For Berry, Lacey Sheppard shot an 85 — the best round of the day — and had a 170 two-day tally. Chelse Hoag (176), Nicole Wood (177) and Lauren Buschhorn (189) rounded out the Viking lineup.

Berry entered the day in 9th place. However, Wisconsin Stout shot a 335 and moved from 11th to sixth place. Addtionally, Wisconsin River Falls leap-frogged the Vikings by shooting 347 on Monday, and finished four strokes ahead of Berry.

Shorter women tied for fifth

The Shorter women’s golf team finds itself tied for fifth place after the completion of first round play at the Full Moon Bar-B-Que Montevallo Invitational hosted by the Timberline Golf Club in Calera, Ala.

Shorter recorded a team total of 316 and enters tomorrow’s final round tied with North Georgia.

Lander University (297) holds a sizable 13-stroke advantage over second place Columbus State (310) while Birmingham Southern and Shorter’s Gulf South Conference rival West Georgia are tied for third with 18-hole scores of 312.

Sophomore Pauline Schopp shot 5-over 76 — the sophomore shot 38 on both the front and back nine at the 5,827-yard par-71 course — to pace all Lady Hawks in the field and stand in a tie for seventh place overall.

Isabella Baldacci and Maria Bengtsson are among four players tied for 13th place after opening round scores of 78 and Claudia Orrantia, the fourth competitor to score for the Lady Hawks, ended her first round with an 84 and is in 32nd.

Freshman J.C. Burgess and sophomore Gabriel Cassinelli fired identical rounds of even par 71 to stand in a tie for fourth place and help Shorter to a second place standing after 18 holes at the Full Moon Bar-B-Que Montevallo Invitational hosted by the Timberline Golf Club in Calera, Ala.

Juan Giraldo is in ninth overall after his 1-over 72 to give Shorter three players within the top 10 of the seven-team, 35-athlete field.

Tyler Steptoe chipped in with an opening round 76, thanks to a blistering back nine of 33, and is in 20th as the Hawks managed to shoot a team total of 290 on Monday to sit seven shots back of host and leader Montevallo (283) with 18 holes to play.

Ethan Lambert, Shorter’s fifth and final competitor, is in 33rd for Shorter after shooting an 81 on opening day.
