Shorter’s Gabriel Cassinelli turned in a fourth place overall finish at the Full Moon Bar-B-Que Montevallo Invitational, leading the Hawks to a third-place team finish in the fall preseason event hosted by Timberline Golf Club in Calera, Ala.

Cassinelli, who shot even par 71 in Monday’s first round, following up that performance with a 1-over 72 in Tuesday’s second round to post a two-day total of 143 and finish seven strokes back of tournament medalist Conner Godsey (136) of team champion and host Montevallo.

Juan Giraldo (72-74-146) and J.C. Burgess (71-76-147) placed 11th and 13th overall for the Hawks, who compiled a team total of 582 (290-292) to finish 15 strokes back of Montevallo (567) and just two shots behind runner-up West Georgia (580) of the Gulf South Conference. Shorter placed ahead of Wingate (589) and North Greenville (593), who rounded out the top five team finishers with fourth and fifth place finishes, respectively.

Lady Hawks place third at Montevallo Invitational

Sophomore Pauline Schopp placed third overall with a two-day total of 150 (+8) to lead the Shorter women’s golf team to a third-place team finish at the Full Moon Bar-B-Que Montevallo Invitational hosted by the Timberline Golf Club in Calera, Ala.

Schopp led the Lady Hawks to a second round surge that resulted in a top three finish after Shorter found itself in a tie for fifth after the tournament’s first 18 holes. She followed up her first round 76 with a second round 74 (+3) to finish four strokes behind medalist Kimesha Anthony of Columbus State.

As a team, Shorter compiled a two-day total of 626 (316-310) and finished ahead of new Gulf South Conference rival West Georgia, which ended its tournament run with a total score of 628.

The Lady Hawks, who were four strokes back of the Lady Wolves after Monday’s play, finished six strokes better than West Georgia in Tuesday’s second round to slip into the third spot on the final leaderboard.

Shorter had three individuals finish in the top 10 of the final standings.

Joining Schopp were sophomore Isabella Baldacci and senior Maria Bengtsson, who shot identical rounds of 78-77 to post two-day totals of 155 and place in a five-way tie for seventh overall.

Claudia Orrantia shot 166 (84-82) and Amanda Schwartz shot 175 (90-85) to place 31st and 40th, respectively, and round out Shorter’s competitors.

Lander University won the team title with a final total of 610 (297-313) while Columbus State (614) finished second. West Georgia and North Georgia (639) made up the rest of the top five team finishers.
