The delicious scent of mouthwatering barbecue will waft throughout Rolater Park during the sixth annual Cave Spring Pig Out B-B-Q Cook Off on Saturday.

The event, which runs from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m., is sure to draw a great — and hungry — crowd. Adults will pay $5 to attend the Pig Out, and children younger than 10 get free admission.

The event is a fundraiser for the Cave Spring Downtown Development Authority, said Martha Macon Crowe, interim director for the DDA, and all the proceeds will go toward helping the Welcome Center and the History Museum pay off some debt and bring in new artifacts.

“We have 15 teams coming in to do the cooking, and there will be butts, ribs and brisket,” Crowe said.

Pig Out-goers can pay $2 to taste the teams’ barbecue, she said, and can vote for their favorite team to receive the People’s Choice Award.

“Actually, you get just about a pound of meat when you’re going down through the line, tasting the different teams’ meat that they’ve cooked, and each team does it different ways,” Crowe said. “You’re tasting meat from 15 different teams; you’re going to be full by the end of it.”

But the fun doesn’t center on just the barbecue. Crowe said on the other side of Rolater Park there will be an antique car show as well as a Heritage Art exhibition where demonstrators will show the old arts of blacksmithing, quilting and tatting. Arts and crafts will also be on display and for sale, including jewelry and other pieces of artwork.

Crowe said Ford Motor Co. is bringing two new Ford Escapes to the event, and for every person that registers to win the vehicles, Ford will donate $1 to the Feeding the Hungry program of Georgia.

“Redmond EMC has something set up so kids can make a craft they will be able to take home with them,” Crowe said, adding that all children’s activities will be free. “The Coosa Valley Credit Union will have inflatables for kids to play on.”

The Sons of Confederate Veterans will also be present in their period uniforms, firing a cannon periodically throughout the day, Crowe said. People can also take a wagon tour pulled by a mule throughout Cave Spring while a local historian tells the riders about the community’s rich history. A DJ will provide music throughout the day and a group of line dancers will perform.

Crowe said the Pig Out has become a much-anticipated event for Cave Spring and barbecue lovers look forward to it each year.

“Cookers have been coming since we started it and every year we pick up more and more,” Crowe said. “It’s a fun, fun activity for adults and children.”
