Adventure and mystery surround the Armuchee High School marching band’s halftime show this season as the group performs music from the “Pirates of the Caribbean” films.

“It’s a big step up from what we did last year,” drum major Julia Chatfield said. “I’m very excited about the show this year and to have the opportunity to direct it.”

Chatfield, a sophomore, is the marching band’s lone drum major this football season and has accepted the challenge of being one of the youngest drum majors the Armuchee band program has had.

“It’s been a lot harder than you would expect,” she said. “I’ve had to work to take the time to develop a connection with some of the older band members, but I do enjoy it. It comes natural to me.”

But Chatfield said that she has worked with band director Seth Bates to get better and has been involved with the Armuchee high school band program since the summer following sixth grade.

The show features seven-and-a-half minutes of continuous music from the blockbuster films and will include special effects as the band works to perfect it for competitions.

“We are going to add fog machines and a recording of a band member singing a song from the films and then have a huge pirate flag come out at the end of the show,” Chatfield said.

While the group is small, they have proven that they can be a crowd-pleaser as they finished third out of 17 bands at one competition last year and are planning on having a very successful season this year.

“I’m really proud of them,” Chatfield said. “We have so many younger people, and it’s a very tough show, … but we have a lot going for us, and I think it will be great based on what we’ve done so far.”
