LETTER TO THE EDITOR: GOP blocks jobs bill for veterans

THE REPUBLICANS’ strategy is obvious. They are following the precept of the Senate Majority Leader, who declared his determination to make President Obama a one-term president.

To do this, they have blocked virtually every legislative proposal that Obama has made, and then they accuse him of failing to lead. Their most recent manoeuvre is absolutely reprehensible. They have voted against a bill that would have created jobs for our returning veterans, enabling them to become firefighters and policemen. They prevented the bill from even coming to a vote. The 40 Republicans who voted against it included four who wrote it. According to the Washington Examiner the cost of the bill would be covered by collecting unpaid taxes over five years.

It is clear that the only reason the Republicans blocked this bill was to prevent Obama from getting credit for it so close to the November election. I can only hope that if Obama is re-elected that the American public will elect Democratic senators so that the Democrats can regain control of the Senate.

I am not Barack Obama, and I approved this message.

My fellow American’s. It has been brought to my attention that 47% of the citizens of the United States pay 0% in the way of Federal Income Tax. Well, there’s more to these figures than just the figures, as my army of liberal mathematicians and accountants will attest to.

144 Million American’s are not paying a single dime into the system. 41% of all babies being born are paid by you, the taxpayer. After using various deductions, child credits, etc., it’s possible for most American’s earning, say, $50,000 a year with several children to get their effective tax rate down to zero….Even if they can’t, it’s still very low.

It is estimated that the middle class, earning $50,000 to $70,000 have an effective tax rate, on average, of 3% to 7%.

But…be assured…I have an army of liberal pundits and reporters who are working 24/7 around the clock to prove otherwise….Why, everyone knows that the “middle class” pays 28%…right?

Bingo! Shows what a wonderful job our liberal news hounds are doing!

1988.…Reagan…..19% paid zero.

2000.…Clinton…..25% paid zero.

2008.…Bush……..30% paid zero.

2012.…Obama……47% paid zero.

A 17% increase in just 4 years! Wonderful! Time to rejoice!

If this is a good thing, be sure to vote for Barack Obama…again, and again, and again at a inner city precinct near you….Remember…no identification required in most states!

This isn't really surprising since many middle class families have fallen into poverty.

I think what's surprising is that my effective tax rate last year was higher than Romney's (and probably Obama's).

dbeall,

Your entire argument is invalid. Governments role is to create an environment for private sector job creation. If you look over the last 4 years over 4.5 Million private sector jobs have been created. (Source Bureau of Labor Statistics)

The whole tax and spend argument is a GOP/TP talking point creation.

Gyges,

I am so sorry to hear Cindy passed. I remember her as a sweet pretty young girl. We moved in to the projects I think in the summer of 1968 just as I turned 12. I left in January 1976 for the Navy and honestly never looked back. As you know it was a harsh environment and I could not wait to get away.

We lived at number 119. I never had any real close friends and only remember Cindy and her sister because I had a crush on her.

But some names that come to mind are the Cantrells?, The Ely's? , A girl names Juanita Keirce? I remember more names from school but not all them lived in the projects.

Marty Lundy...Julie Prim, Sandra Strain? Tim East. Carol Frost...I think I remember her because she got pregnant in school....OooooH the scandal. Oh..Ronny Dixon and Mary Jane Tomlin..

Honestly I remember being a geeky kid who never fit in. When I turned 18 I could not get to the recruiters office fast enough. I had to wait almost a year for my DEP slot to open but in January 1976 I bolted. During the year I waited I worked at Pepperell Mill in the Beaming room...What a crappy job.

I visited fewer and fewer times over the years. My last visit was the summer of 2011 when my oldest daughter from my first marriage graduated nursing school.

It had been over a decade since I was last in Rome and the changes were pretty striking. The city did a nice job with the Forum, walking bridge and fountains. That area used to be the Greyhound bus station and was very dodgy.

My family and 4 brothers and I are not close....We grew apart somewhere on life's journey.

I visited 13th street when I was down in 2011 and cringed at the memories the place evoked.

Again....My heartfelt condolences on the news of Cindy's passing.

Government doesn't create jobs unless they are government jobs. Those jobs are not necessarily beneficial to society as a whole. Just because you add firemen and policemen doesn't mean they are needed. When the givernment stops taxing and spending, then the private sector will create the jobs. This is not a matter of opinion. This is a basic economic fact. Ask any small business owner.

Actually government research funding has created entire industries.

The sad thing is, government taxes the people to pay for the research then gives the results away.

For the most part this is fine, since it does create countless jobs and wealth in America. It becomes a problem when the beneficiaries become sick with greed and begin shafting everyone else including the government, all under the guise of being 'self-made'.

...and this isn't an argument for one party or the other, it's just a basic economic fact.

Typical liberal tactic, ignore the truth...divert and change the topic...avoiding reality.

Watch the video...You'll love it!....Wonderful Democrats, praising the man who gave them Obamaphones! Speaks volumes about the type of people who support Obama, as well as WHY they support him!

Rather typical behavior, too. I'm loving it!

We have an awful lot of people taking advantage of our social system. It's really sad that, it is estimated, that perhaps 50% of the food stamps given out are then "resold" so inner city deadbeats like the woman in the "Obamaphone" video can buy their booze, drugs, cheap hookers, etc.

Over 70% of babies being born to black mothers are being born out of wedlock....no deadbeat dad within sight. After nearly 150 years, things aren't better...they are worse. Billions of dollars have flooded into the ghetto...evidently down a societal drainage hole. Millions and millions of immigrants...poor Irish, Chinese, Pakistani, Vietnamese, Indian, Cubans, etc., with literally nothing on their backs. They settled in areas amongst themselves, worked hard, learned the language, and achieved the American dream...Yet we have one segment of our society that continues to wallow in failure, refuses to man up, refuses to work 100 hours a week at low pay if need to, and get out of the gutter.

We can blame anyone and everyone...But in the end, we have to accept our faults and failures.

Many blacks do achieve the dream...through hard work, holding common family values, education and a DESIRE to break away from the ghetto language/lifestyle/mentality.

Sadly, blacks, themselves, single out the successful individuals and call them Uncle Toms, etc. Utterly disgusting.

Some individuals have taken heat from the black community whenever they tell their peers to stop this Rap Crap boneheaded foolishness and blend in. Bill Cosby is one of them.

Check out the Obamaphone Lady...sad and funny!

I actually just had a food stamp conversation yesterday. I think the system could be fairly easily reformed.

It'd probably cost the government a little money up front, but the result would be a system that still provides food to those who need it, but is also a system that people wouldn't want to be on unless absolutely necessary.

Maybe I should write a letter to the RNT. lol

Watchingit,

You seem to dust off my DailyKos comments whenever you feel the conservative masterminds are losing a debate.

I have stated before.... that was me and I meant every word I said.

President Obama had at time once again compromised with Republicans...This time on health care....Yep I was very angry.

Yep I still want single payer medicare socialized medicine for all. The post was just after the public option died an ugly death.

What is your point? I repeatedly ask this question whenever some one finds that post.. So What's your point?

I have stated repeatedly that I have serious disagreements with President Obama...

And after the election I will be working to push him on certain issues.

But since 2010 the GOP/TP have demonstrated over and over that they are certifiable.

So if my choice is an honorable man I disagree with and ANY of the wingnut right the choice is easy.

jimsocks706,

You defend the rich guy then screech about welfare queens and Porche's. As someone who grew up on welfare, food-stamps and lived in the projects...Your comparisons are both incorrect and complete BS.

NONE of the poor want to be poor. If government helps them then they succeed and live the American dream.

This whole Tea Party rich versus the poor worldview will be crushed on 6 November. Good Riddance.....

BTW NONE of you even bothered to refute my belief that President Obama will win in a landslide.

Maybe in your hearts you know it's over.

Of course Obama will win.

"I will keep the checks coming to your mailboxes" vs. "I will give you the opportunity to work". Checks win every time.

It's not that poor want to be poor, of COURSE they'd love to be rich, that's why so many poor, especially in the areas in which you grew up, can be found shooting hoops or sitting in front of the convenience store every day. That's "their way" of seeking success.

So you grew up on welfare and food stamps. So did my father. Rather than continue the cycle and wallow in woo is me, he actually utilized the opportunity of the American Dream and thought about how to afford college. So, he served our country in the airforce during a war-hence he gave to our country. Then, he went to college on the G.I. bill, and did so well he went on to Harvard and received his MBA. Then he got a job making $500,00.00 a year. Yes!!!! It can be done!! Oh, he is also BLACK!!! This probably helped him in many ways. You can do it! Anyone can do it. This is America. We are the choices that we make, and WE MUST ASSUME RESPONSIBILITIES FOR OURSELVES AND OUR ACTIONS.

Rhuidean07,

You wrote, "OK you gave your reasons for opposing Obama and my first thought was….What are you? Five?" The answer is NO, I'm a Navy Vet (1965-1969) Spent a year in training then two years over seas then 8 months in Portsmouth Naval Hospital while then repaired the damage to my leg. For that the VA pays me a 30% disablity, I'm a retired correctional officer so I get another retirement check plus my Social Security. That make three check I get each month that I don't have to work for, so I guess I'm a Democrat!

I know you think I'm a far right wing/tea party member, but you are very wrong. And yes I played the "Race Card" by asking you if you would defend Obama if he was white, but that is on you because you started it. Yes you did! With your remarks about a "Angry white men." Didn't your Mama teach you that when you start pointing fingers, you've got three pointing back at you? Let me give you some good advice, Seek help---You need it.

I would not vote for anyone that spent their first term campaigning for re-election. No matter how hard you try you will never convince me to vote for Obama.

Let's just cut to the chase here people. I am a Rebulican. I do not care if the President is black or white. I do not care if a person wants to marry his gay lover, or a goat for that matter. I do not care if you go have youself an abortion party. What I care about is that almost the largest proportion of our society ever expects other people to pay for thier lifestyle through taxation, taxation, taxation. The upper middle class and "rich" pay for all of this crap, and all of the stuff that people feel they are entitled to. It is ridiculous!!! Hey, maybe the poor should pay for me to have a porshe. I am not talking about the sick, disabled, or retired military-I am not talking about people who have paid into the system, but all of the rest.

If democrats want to pay for all of the food stamps, housing, and welfare for people HAVE AT IT- IT IS CALLED CHARITY!!!!! What is going on now is stealing from hardworking people who have dedicated their lives to hard work and an education. I am not talking about people who are temporarily out of work. I am talking about those who have made living off of everyone else a lifestyle. Small business has to pay more tax than any other country in the world. Once people in our society can no longer afford to run a business or industry because of heavy taxes, America will be done. If you hate the rich, where do you think the handouts are going to come from? If Bill Gates pays only 10% in income taxes is that fair? YES!!!! He pays millions in other taxes and gives millions upon millons to charity. He pays millions in business taxes. HE HAS WORKED HARD-HE DESERVES IT!!!!!

The demise of America has begun. People will go to school for 30 years, pay $200,000. for an upper level education, work 100 hous a week, and be taxed so greatly that it will no longer be worth it.

Would you do it??? Really??

Yet I do not hear people complain about the incomes of prfessional football players or reality T.V. stars. It has become too much. Look around.

If you say that everything that has happened is because of Bush, you really need to get a life.

It does not matter who did it. Americans voted for a person to fix it. The person had 4 years and it is only worse. How can you explain that?

If a corporation was doing poorly, and a new CEO was hired to fix it, if in 4 years things were worse, he would be fired.

Reality check time.

P.S. How much are you getting form the taxpayers?

Excerpt from Rhuidean07's June 2010 post in the Daily Kos - in his own words:

“After the Dems got killed in the mid terms he again wanted Bipartisanship. ARE YOU KIDDING???? If President Obama cannot find the spine to fight back and call these lying Republicans liars then I will devote ALL my efforts to finding a challenger for him who actually gets what his base wants. Till then do not bother telling me how much we have accomplished or how you need my help.” The entire post is long and interesting.

Just who are you Rhuidean - let’s see, a Navy Vet (LtComdr, Retired, WWII era), a contractor working in the Middle East, and now a great job and family. Will the real Rhuidean please stand up!!

OK you gave your reasons for opposing Obama and my first thought was….What are you? Five? I acknowledge that ALL politicians break promises. However voting to elect the pathological lying uber rich vulture capitalist based on the below is frankly….Moronic and an excuse for race issues.

BTW you are the one who opened the racial door when you asked me if I would support President Obama if he was white. To me the mere fact of the question displays your feelings about race. That’s on you.

So go ahead and vote for the other guy…I hope you bring ALL your friends and EVERYBODY votes. Big Woop….There is no chance of President Obama winning Georgia this year. Almost all of the Confederate states will vote against him.

But not North Carolina and Virginia.

Elections have consequences…

In America with 8% unemployment and a unified base of old white guys who are extremely angry with the incumbent president the GOP/TP will lose this election by a landslide.

When the American people speak they will soundly reject the views of the old south.

Do you REALLY think that with the changing demographics the GOP/TP in its present form will ever win a national race again? If so there's bridge in Brooklyn for sale.

Hey...I almost forgot...

None of you could find a single thing the 112th congress has done to help the middle class.

rhudean07,

Let's get one thing straight, I don't like bigots black or white. I have no use for the term "African-American", "Asian-American" or any other "Race-American". You are either an American or you're not.

Now this is why I don't like President Obama.

Obama promised, to put all bills on the White House web site for five days before signing them.

Didn't happen.

Obama promised, to have the congressional health care negotiations broadcast live on C-SPAN.

Didn't happen.

Obama promised, to end earmarks.

It's still going on.

Obama promised, to keep unemployment from rising above 8 percent.

Did it ever come under 8 percent?

Obama promised, to close the detention center at Guantanamo in the first year.

It's still operating.

Obama promised, to make peace with direct, no precondition talks with America 's most hate-filled enemies during his first year in office, ushering in a new era of global cooperation.

Looks like very poor effort to me.

Obama promised, to end the hiring of former lobbyists into high White House jobs.

This never will change Republican or Democrat.

Obama promised, to end no-compete contracts with the government.

Nancy and Harry would throw a fit if he did this.

Obama promised, to disclose the names of all attendees at closed White House meetings.

Did you ever see a list?

Obama promised, for a new era of bipartisan cooperation in all matters.

Only if the Republicans give in to his way.

If Obama wins in November the country can survive another four years of his presidency, But I doubt it will survive the people that elected him.

Jrbobcat and Enforcer,

Blah, Blah, and Blather……You go on and on about any Obama supporter is “Stupid”……Hey you are entitled to your opinion…But I will offer you two the same challenge that I offer all the mouth breathing right wing Neanderthals….

Name one single piece of legislation that the GOP/TP has proposed or passed in the last two years that would benefit the average middle class American. I have looked at the voting record for the 112th congress and only say….Good luck with that…

Jimsocks706,

You Wrote: CONGRASS WAS CONTROLLED IN BOTH THE HOUSE AND THE SENATE BY DEMOCRATES AND THE SOCIALISTIC OBAMA PASSED OBAMACARE, BAILED OUT WALL STREET, AND PASSED ANYTHING HE DEEMED FIT

I reply: First you do not understand the meaning of Socialist. Obamacare is a government private industry partnership. It has insured an additional 40 million Americans while lowering the deficit, closing Medicare Doughnut hole. All the while lowering the deficit. Yeah….Obamacare is Baaaaaad….

About the bailing out of Wall Street….That was Bush…It happened months before Obama took office…guess they don’t have calendars at your house.

Since 2010 the wonderful Tea Party nut-jobs have blocked everything the president has tried to accomplish….These are the same economic terrorists that cheered when Americas credit rating was damaged.

But that’s Ok...... there time is ending in a few weeks.

BTW I loved the all Caps…It did not help your intellectually weak argument but it showed clearly you could yell loudly…..

LiedToAgainAndAgain,

Have you ever been in an American embassy? I am guessing not…contrary to your imbecilic assertions they are not heavily fortified compounds. Each host country decides how much and many security personnel are allowed in to country.

Seriously…..What would have made you happy? Obama beaming himself to the scene and catching the incoming bullets in his teeth.

BTW Libyans against terrorists stormed and burnt to the ground the compound of the militia leader responsible for the attack.

Imagine that…….

Gyges,

I want to thank you for being upfront in your racism. My demise? Dude…you’re seriously mistaken. I grew up in the 13th street projects and now have a great job and family…Color of skin or race never enters my mind. I understand that in north Georgia there are many who feel as you do. It was BS 30 years ago and is ignorance and BS now.

Tiredofthiscrap!!,

You adopt the usual defensive position after making a racial comment.

Race matters to you or you would not have asked the question.

All of you need to stop and contemplate that in 6 weeks President Obama will be reelected.

I am not trying to be mean or upset a group of people, but we are talking about our lives here people. Now, if one can get their focus off of Make Way for Honey Boo Boo and Jersey Shore for a minute and try to seek out truth, our country may have a fighting chance.

Now, to address the letter regarding the GOP blocking everything that Obama is trying to achieve, do not forget people that during Obama's first two years in office CONGRASS WAS CONTROLLED IN BOTH THE HOUSE AND THE SENATE BY DEMOCRATES AND THE SOCIALISTIC OBAMA PASSED OBAMACARE, BAILED OUT WALL STREET, AND PASSED ANYTHING HE DEEMED FIT. THANK GOD THAT A FEW INTELLIGENT PEOPLE NOTICED WHERE THIS WAS HEADED AND PUT SOME OF THESE DEMOCRATS OUT OF OFFICE. IT WAS ONLY AT THIS POINT THAT THE GOP BEGAN BLOCKING OBAMA. AND THANK GOD THEY DID!!!!!

President Obama blew it, as far as his handling/mishandling of the tragic terrorist attack in Libya.

Several things to notice:

1. Obama failed to properly oversee the protection of our American ambassador serving in an area that was a hotbed of unrest. The compound structure did not even have BULLET PROOF GLASS….and was far, far from being a safe haven of protection.

2. Obama failed to acknowledge that it was a planned TERRORIST ATTACK, deferring to call it anything BUT an act of terrorism, even while leaders in the area called it just that.

3. Obama failed to call a terrorist a terrorist, continuing to fail to call these killers for what they really are. It is as though the term “terrorist” or “radical muslim” has disappeared from Obama’s vocabulary. Shameful, to say the least.

4. Obama failed to properly secure the area AFTER the attack, permitting papers, computers, documents to quickly disappear.

5. Obama CONTINUED to fail to secure the area, permitting CNN to pick up the ambassador’s journal 4 DAYS LATER! That’s 4 DAYS LATER, folks, and the compound was said to be open to anyone passing by!

6. Obama failed, and still fails, to man up to his failure…He is still in denial, and refuses to accept it for what it was…a planned and staged terrorist attack.

7. Obama failed to attend a SINGLE DEFENSIVE BRIEFING in the entire week leading up to 9/11...not a single one, yet he has time for Letterman, Whoopi and Jay-J.

If Obama is the answer, I don’t want to hear the question.

Why would the budgets be so bad? Oh Wait....It's because the Republicans crashed the economy, put two wars on the governments credit card and slashed taxes at the same time.

Then to top it off they whine and grouse as President Obama cleans up their mess...

Whatever race or religion a person belongs to doesn't matter to me. Truth, honesty, and the ability to keep your word does. President Obama doesn't have these qualities. Almost four years into his term and he is still blaming George Bush. Simple truth is he failed to lead the Democrats that control Congress, He failed to win over the Republicans that could have helped.

LiedToAgainAndAgain,

Do you even understand the concept of "On topic"

Janet' s letter is based on factual events.

1. Yes The Senate filibustered the Veterans Jobs act. The measure failed because 40 GOP Senators voted as a block against it.

2. Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnel actually did say that the single number one goal of the GOP was to "Make Obama a one term president". Yes she mixed up majority and minority.....So What?

What's to dispute about that?

You go off on another ling winded rant about every imagined sin Obama supposedly has committed.

Blah....Blah....Blah.....

None of your anger, gnashing of teeth or general unhappiness will change the coming losses of Ryan and Romney.

America is going to reject your worldview and in the end all you will have is your anger.

You better save some for the coming 4 years.

When it comes to fireman and police veterans are considered first because of their service to their country and training. If they meet the requirements and pass all tests they will be hired and trained by their agencies. Most agencies have open slots but because of their budget can not hire. This bill would do nothing to help because the Federal government can not afford to pay the salaries for the agencies. It's another useless attempt by the Obama administration. After 4 years of failure it is time for a change. Nobama 2012.

Spin it any way you want, it was a bad bill. Read the bill. It includes lots of “pork” items that had nothing to do with jobs for veterans. Senate Majority Leader Reid (D) would not allow amendments that might have helped it pass. There are 100 Senators. Currently the count is 51 Democrats, 47 Republicans, 2 Independents. The procedural vote was 58 to 40 (60 votes would have been required to waive Republican objections). Five (5) Republicans voted for the bill. I repeat, Read The Bill!
