Rose Davis considers herself more of a songstress than actress, so it only makes sense then that the Rome native’s big screen debut will be in a movie about competitive singing groups.

Davis, a 2009 Armuchee High School graduate and current Tulane University student, described her role in the flick — titled “Pitch Perfect” and premiering today — as principal, but not starring. She plays singer No. 2 in a group called BU Harmonics.

“We dress in a lot of bright colors. We are the preppy ones you could say,” said Davis.

“Pitch Perfect” is about a girl named Beca, a freshman at the fictional Barden University in Atlanta. She is cajoled into joining The Bellas, her school’s all-girls singing group. Injecting some much-needed energy into their repertoire, The Bellas take on their male rivals in a campus competition.

The BU Harmonics are one of several other singing groups on campus and they appear on screen several times, including a scene in which they perform in an empty swimming pool. En route to film that scene, Davis said she sat next to one of the stars of the movie, Rebel Wilson, best known for her role as the female roommate in “Bridesmaids,” on the bus. Wilson plays Fat Amy in this movie.

Because the movie was filmed in November on the campus of Louisiana State University, and the pool scene was filmed at night, the weather was cold and wet. Davis said Wilson introduced herself and said she was concerned that everyone was going to be uncomfortable.

“Most of the people were really nice and very accommodating,” she said, who noted that she spent a couple of hours in hair and makeup everyday for the two weeks of filming. “It was very surreal.”

Davis became involved in the movie when someone came to Tulane looking for acapella groups.

She is a vocal performance student with a focus on jazz and a member of just such a group called THEM. After impressing the first scout, she and other group members traveled to Baton Rouge to audition for the director. The rest is movie history.

She does have some background in acting, having performed in roles at Armuchee High and for the Rome Little Theatre, but Davis considers herself more a vocal performer. The movie experience, however, was not only fun but it also led to some new connections in the vocal world, and Davis will be traveling to perform across the country as a result.

“It was so, so cool,” said Davis. “It has brought me some other opportunities I wouldn’t have had.”

“Pitch Perfect” opens today at the Movies at Berry Square. Showtimes are 4:45 p.m., 7:30 p.m. and 9:45 p.m.
