Shorter started the match with a win in the first set, before giving up the following two, forcing the Lady Hawks to win the last two sets to leave with a victory over Gulf South Conference rival Christian Brothers.
The Lady Hawks (10-2, 4-2 GSC) were able to rally to take the match 27-25, 26-28, 26-28, 25-18, 15-11. The win marks the 10th victory for 2012 for Jon Moseley's squad.
Loren Olive led the Lady Hawks with 19 kills with Jasmine Crook (15), Anna Graham (13) and Leslie Welch (11) all recording double digit kills. Welch hit .304 to be the top for the Lady Hawks, who concluded the road trip with a 2-1 record.
Tanequa Whitman registered 30 digs for the match. Olive helped out with 15 digs, followed by Jordan Corder and Dena Pierce with 12 each.
Corder tallied 62 of the team total 68 assists. She now has 511 on the season as she begins closing in on the career mark of 3,950 that is currently held by Kristy Walker.
Olive served up four service aces, with Megan Pepe registering three. Shorter served 14 aces as a team for the match, compared to the seven from Christian Brothers (9-4, 4-1 GSC). Olive is now the holder of the career mark for service aces. She passed Katie Van Hofwegen, who had set the mark at 163 for a career. Olive started 2012 with 151 and has 14 to rank second this season.
Shorter has three home matches this upcoming week, with two versus GSC opponents, and all three starting at 7 pm. Bryan visits on October 2, with GSC foes Alabama-Huntsville on October 4 and West Georgia on October 5.
Rally not enough as Men's Soccer falls to West Alabama, 3-2
Shorter (2-6-1, 1-4 GSC) gave up three goals in the first half to West Alabama (8-1, 4-0 GSC) who came into the game as the No. 7 ranked team according to the National Soccer Coaches Association of America, before a comeback fell short in a 3-2 loss at Ben Brady Field.
The Tigers had only given up six goals in the eight games previously this season, with only one other opponent scoring multiple goals against the team this year.
At the 37 minute mark in the first half, the Hawks were down 3-0, but two minutes later Trevor Greenwald sent in a pass that Sean Malloy was able to drive home for his first goal of the season.
In the second half the Hawks were much more aggressive and were outplaying the Tigers when Irvin Espinal made a run down the middle of the field and was able to score the second Hawks goal in the 62nd minute to pull the team within one goal. The goal marks Espinal's fifth in nine games to lead the Hawks.
Austen Trevers was inserted into goal at the half and was able to make two saves to stop the Tiger scoring attack.
The Hawks are back in action on Sunday as West Florida comes to Ben Brady Field for a 4:30 pm game, with the Argos riding a three game winning streak that has them standing at 4-2-1 overall (3-0-1 GSC).
Women's Soccer falls 2-0 at home to West Alabama
West Alabama (5-3-2, 3-1-1 GSC) avenged an earlier season loss to Shorter (2-6-1, 1-3-1 GSC) with a 2-0 victory at Ben Brady Field. Shorter had gone to West Alabama on September 7 and left with a double OT victory, each team is now sporting a road win in the rivalry.
The National Soccer Coaches Association of America had voted the Tigers as No. 5; with Sophomore Forward Nicki Gears as the leading point scorer in the country. Gears is the reigning GSC Player of the Week and was the star for the West Alabama team as she scored two goals on the night. Her first came at the 33:47 mark off the assist from Lillian Khodabandeh to give her team a 1-0 lead at the half. Gears then sealed the match just 15 minutes into the second period as she scored the unassisted goal.
Katie Stachula was solid in goal she made 11 saves in her sixth start of the season.
Aline Bez Tamiosso tallied six shots, two of which were saved by the UWA keeper. Tamiosso leads the team for shots taken this season with 36. Brandi Greenwald took two shots and Cintia Lamas added one.
The Lady Hawks will welcome West Florida (9-0, 5-0 GSC) to Ben Brady Field Sunday at 2 pm. The Argonauts are sporting a nine game wining streak after a 4-1 win at Alabama-Huntsville tonight.
North Alabama deals Lady Hawks second loss of the season, 3-1
The Lady Hawks (9-2, 2-2 GSC) volleyball team suffered only their second loss on the season as they fell to the Lions from North Alabama (3-8, 2-2 GSC) by a score of 3-1.
Shorter was able to seize the first set with a 25-23 decision, but North Alabama was able to rally back to take the victory by winning the next three sets 25-23, 25-19, 25-23.
For Shorter, Leslie Welch was able to amass 15 kills while hitting .308 for the match, while Anna Graham had 11 kills and hit .276. As a team, the Lady Hawks hit only .133 while commiting 28 errors.
The Lady Hawks had four players record double digit digs; Dena Pierce (14), Loren Olive (13), Tanequa Whitman (12), and Jordan Corder (11). Corder also accounted for 42 of the teams 47 assists.
Priscilla Massengale and her 17 kills and 13 digs led North Alabama. Casey Roethler (21) and Caroline Neisler (20) topped the Lions in digs, while Hope Rayburn had the match high 44 assists on the night.
The Lady Hawks finish their three game road trip of conference opponents with a 2 pm match at Christian Brothers University tomorrow afternoon.
