Why is the Rome News-Tribune pink today?

Today’s editions of the Rome News-Tribune are printed on pink paper as part of Floyd Medical Center’s efforts to honor the women and men who have been touched by breast cancer and to remind women over 40 of the importance of an annual mammogram and a clinical breast exam.

Since 2001, Floyd Medical Center has focused on breast health awareness each October, which is National Breast Cancer Awareness month, because the statistics are staggering.

One in eight women will be diagnosed with breast cancer during her lifetime. That means each of us likely knows someone: a wife, mother, sister, daughter, aunt, niece, cousin or friend who has been or will be affected by the disease. When discovered and treated early, breast cancer has a 5-year survival rate of 98 percent.

The Rome News-Tribune will return to its regular colors on Tuesday, but publisher Otis M. Raybon Jr. said he hopes the community’s awareness of cancer, especially breast cancer, and the top quality of care available in Northwest Georgia continues beyond today.

Please don't do this again. We are all well aware of breast cancer and there are other ways to publicize the fight against this awful disease. The newspaper literally hurt my eyes and I couldn't get past the third page.

whom ever came up with the idea to publish today's paper in pink should receive a day off with pay, great job getting the word out and making the public aware of such a dreadful disease.

Good cause, good intentions, bad execution. You've got to be able to read the paper and the pink newsprint made that close to impossible.
