The Lady Cats made the more than two-hour road trip for a prime-time match up with four-year college Oakwood University. After taking game one, Oakwood would have their hands full, but managed to steal away the next three to win the non-region match 25-20, 19-25, 23-25, 16-25.

The all-freshman squad from northwest Georgia would be led by Candice McClain with 13 kills on the night. The 5-foot-3 freshman hitter from LaFayette (HS), along with her first-year teammates, will help Georgia Northwestern (1-7) host Covenant College Monday night at The R.A.C., Rossville Athletic Complex, at 7 p.m. Covenant College took the first match of the 2012 series atop Lookout Mountain just one week ago in a four-game match win over Georgia Northwestern.

The Lady Cats compete in the N JCAA’s Region XVII and awards all students free admission with student i.d.

Centre Defeats Berry, 1-0

Playing on the road yet again, Berry could not muster any offense and lost to Centre, 1-0, in a Saturday evening matchup.

Berry drops to 7-3 and 0-1 in Southern Athletic Association play while Centre improves to 7-2 and 1-0.

The game-winning goal came during the 79th minute when Centre's Jeremy Carlson fed Ryan Garvey for the decisive score past Berry keeper Logan Hill.

Berry outshot Centre by a 13-11 margin during the game. Junior Samer Hajmurad led Berry with four shots. Centre's Garvey led the team with four shots. Berry's has outshot its opponents and all three defeats.

Hill took the loss for Berry after making two saves. Centre keeper Zach Sosnovich earned the win, making four saves along the way.

Berry will return to action in another SAA game when it squares off against Rhodes College on Friday afternoon at 4 p.m. The match is part of Mountain Day festivities.

Hawks lose tough one versus West Florida, 5-2

It took less than a minute for the scoring to start, and at the end of the day Shorter found themselves on the wrong side of a 5-2 decision to West Florida.

West Florida (5-2-1, 4-0-1 GSC) got the scoring started when Dillon Gallet found the back of the net 51 seconds into the match. The Argos would add two more goals in the first half, while Diego Gonzalez was able to score for the Hawks in the seventh minute on a loose ball in front of the net.

Gonzalez was able to put a rebound away in the 63rd minute when Guy Hunt's shot slipped out of the gloves of the Argo keeper for his second goal.

Ryan Edwards was able to record five saves in the first half before yielding way to Austen Trevers.

The Hawks (2-7-1, 1-5-0 GSC) are on the road for the next two games and will get a break from the Gulf South Conference schools. October 3 sees the Hawks at Young Harris, while on October 5 the Hawks visit Coker. The Hawks are back at Ben Brady Field on October 12 for a match up versus Delta State at 5 pm.

Lady Hawks fall in matchup versus No. 2 West Florida, 6-2

West Florida was named No. 2 in the latest NSCAA/Continental Tire Women's National Poll on Tuesday. The Argos made their first trip to Ben Brady Field and left with a 6-2 victory over the Lady Hawks.

West Florida (10-0, 6-0 GSC) was able to get six goals by five different players, and went to halftime with a 5-1 lead. Brandi Greenwald tied things up with her first of two goals in the 13th minute with an assist from Cintia Lamas, before UWF would end the half with four unanswered goals.

Greenwald would start the scoring for the second half when Aline Bez Tamiosso and Diamond Davis were able to find her for a quick goal in the 61st minute. However UWF was able to respond two minutes later to cap the days scoring.

Katie Stachula played the entire match in goal and was able to record five saves versus one of the most potent offenses in women's soccer that registered a season high total in goals.

The Argos finished the match ahead in the shot count 19-8, and they also had nine corner kicks while Shorter had none.

Shorter (2-7-1, 1-4-1 GSC) is on the road this coming week with games on October 5 at West Georgia and October 7 at Valdosta State, before returning to Ben Brady Field on October 14 for a 2 pm start versus North Alabama.
