Rick and Debra Gilbert of Rome recently hosted a fundraiser for Republican State House Candidate Eddie Lumsden. A large crowd from both Floyd and Chattooga Counties was on hand to hear special guest Congressman Phil Gingrey, Congressman Tom Graves and Speaker of the House David Ralston praise Lumsden for his long service to his community, his strong leadership and his servant’s attitude.

Speaker Ralston said the 12th District needs Lumsden to represent them. His record of service and his commitment to his community are exemplary. He went on to say that as a member of the Republican Majority Lumsden will be able to get things done for the 12th District that the current minority representative cannot.

State Representative Katie Dempsey and State Senator Elect Chuck Hufstetler were also present.

Hufstetler, a former County Commissioner, noted how important Lumsden’s service as a County Commissioner and Commission Chairman will be. His first-hand knowledge of Local Government and State Government interactions will be of immense value.

Eddie Lumsden is a retired State Trooper who served Floyd and Chattooga Counties for 25 years. An Air Force/Air Guard Veteran, he and his wife Teresa have owned and operated Teresa Lumsden Insurance Inc. since 1988.

Barbara Reece is about the only decent person left under the Gold Dome. She is more effective and responsive than any of those "Majority Party" members that the Speaker mentions.

For a candidate to bring in politicians from outside the district to tell us what we need doesn't speak well for the candidate's dedication to local control. If, as Speaker Ralston believes, a Republican can "get things done" for the 12th District that "the current minority representative cannot," perhaps the source of the problem is the authoritarian bent of the Georgia Republican Party. When the "current minority representative" was a majority representative, she bravely stood up for area teachers in defiance of then Governor Barnes' policy that would have taken control from the people who know the most about running our schools.
