The University of the Cumberlands shot a two-day 618 and won the Chick-fil-A Collegiate Invitational hosted by Berry College. The Patriots were led by event medalist Liz Stephens, who shot a 145.

The Shorter Lady Hawks finished in third place, seven shots out of the lead, after carding scores of 308-320-628.

Shorter was paced by Pauline Schopp, who earned fourth-place individually with scores of 75-79-154.

She finished nine strokes behind Stephens.

Berry College started and ended the day in 8th place (335-326-661). Lacey Sheppard was the Viking’s top scorer. She shot 79-79 for a two-day tally of 158 and was tied for 15th.

Cumberlands, which shot a 305 on Tuesday, finished eight strokes ahead of Lindsey Wilson.

Overall, the day’s scores were lower than Monday’s rounds, which were played in soggy conditions.

Stephens carded a two-under-par 70-which was the best round of the tournament-on Tuesday. She placed five shots ahead of Kesley Joslyn’s 150. Coastal Georgia’s Sarah Gillard started the day in first place. She fired a 78, however, on the second day and placed third with a 152.

Rhodes was the top NCAA Divsion III team in the event. The Lynx (651) placed four shots ahead of Piedmont (655) and were 10 strokes better than Berry. Other Divisiion III teams were Oglethorpe (687, 12th); Huntingdon (713, 14th); and Millsaps (7933, 17th).

Other Berry College results were: Nikki Cline, 83-78-161, t-23rd; Chelsea Hoag, 88-83-171, t-47th; Nicole Wood, 85-86-171, t-47th; Lauren Buschhorn, 90-95-185, 106, t-74th.

Berry’s Cady Clark (102-94-196, 81st) and Ellen Rayburn (116-108-224, 89th) played as individuals in the event.

Berry returns to action at the BSC Shootout on Oct. 7th.

SHORTER CROSS COUNTRY

Running at the Greater Louisville Classic at E.P. ‘Tom’ Sawyer State Park, Shorter University’s cross country teams held their own against high-level competition.

Hosted by the University of Louisville, the meet featured some of the best teams in the country, such as Georgia, Arizona and Texas.

The Lady Hawks were led by Shea Spicher, who won the silver division race. Her time of 18:30.51 was a personal best by 45 seconds for this particular course. Ashley Logan and Hannah Turner finished closely together at 29th and 32nd, respectively. Katie Rutledge (71st), Breiona Badie (103rd), and Rachel McDaniel (153rd) finished well enough to garner runner up honors in the team competition.

First-year coach Martin Hernandez was pleased with her team.

“I think the girls all ran really well today,” Hernandez said. “This is where the Division I nationals will be run later this season, so the field was packed. Shea was a monster today, and that PR was huge. Things are coming around nicely.”

The men had some success on their end as well, with both Daniel Sorenson and Carlos Perez finishing in the top 10 at 3rd and 5th, respectively. Evans Tanui’s 18th place finish gave the Hawks three in the top 20. Cory Cown (38th) and Derek Douglas (251st) rounded out the team and secured a seventh place team finish in the silver division.

“Our guys are still putting it all together,” said Hernandez. “Our top three guys finishing in the top 20 bodes well for us in the team aspect.”

The teams will take to the road again in two weeks at the Crimson Classic hosted by the University of Alabama. The races begin Saturday, Oct. 13 at 9:30 a.m.

SHORTER CHEERLEADING

Shorter University head competitive cheerleading coach Rachel Magness has announced the dates for her annual Youth Cheer Camp.

This year’s camp will be at Hot Shots Cheerleading on Oct.12. Participants will learn Shorter’s game day chants and cheers and will be invited onto the field to cheer with the Shorter Cheer Hawks during the first quarter of Shorter’s home football game at Barron Stadium on Oct.13.

Camp participants will receive a free SU Cheer/Breast Cancer Awareness T-shirt.

The clinic costs $40 per participant. Those interested can pre-register by Oct. 8 by emailing Coach Magness at rmagness@shorter.edu.

Those who pre-register will receive $5 off the camp fee. Campers can also register at the door.

SHORTER VOLLEYBALL

The Lady Hawks volleyball team made quick work of Bryan College, with a straight sets victory on the court of the Winthrop-King Centre, winning 3-0.

These teams played once before as part of the Milligan Mountain Madness on September 1, with the Lady Hawks taking the 3-2 victory. Tonight the victory came much quicker.

Shorter (11-2, 4-2 Gulf South) has continued their undefeated play outside of the Gulf South Conference.

Tanequa Whitman had 11 digs to lead the team tonight, along with one service ace to move into a tie for the team lead with Loren Olive at 16 for the season. Olive registered two aces on the night when the home crowd recognized her for setting the career mark in that category.

Shorter only hit .176 for the night as a team, but Leslie Welch and Jordan Corder each hit .429 to lead the team. Jasmine Crook had eight kills, while Welch had seven and Anna Graham had six. Corder tallied 22 of the teams 29 assists.

This week, two Gulf South Conference opponents are making their first trips to the Winthrop-King Centre where the Lady Hawks will look to defend home court advantage. Alabama-Huntsville will be here Thursday for a 7 pm start, while west Georgia will be the next night on Friday at 7 pm.
