CEDARTOWN — Cedartown police were still investigating an armed robbery Thursday night that occurred at Fred’s on North Main Street, according to Cedartown Assistant Police Chief Jamie Newsome.

According to Newsome, Kelly Jack Mayo, 45, of Fort Payne, Ala., was charged with felony armed robbery and felony kidnapping after he allegedly attempted to rob the store at 550 N. Main St. and then took a hostage in an attempt to escape.

Newsome said that Cedartown police received the call from Polk County 911 at approximately 9 p.m. and arrived on the scene before the suspect was able to get away.

The suspect then took a woman employee hostage at gunpoint and went out the back door of the store where officers witnessed him get into the employee’s vehicle and drive toward a residential area behind the shopping center.

Newsome said the Cedartown police shift supervisor on duty decided to try and resolve the situation, and an officer rammed the vehicle with his patrol car, forcing the vehicle to stop not far from the store.

The suspect was then taken into custody without further incident, and the hostage was released without injury.

Newsome said there were no shots fired by the suspect or police during the incident, and it was unknown whether the suspect took anything from the store.
