There’s nothing trashy about recycling.

But on Nov. 12, people across Floyd County and Northwest Georgia will participate in the fourth annual Trashion Show, a Recycled Runway Fashion Show, sponsored by Project greenBERRY. Put on by  the Berry College Elementary and Middle School, the Berry College Green Team and Students Against Violating the Earth, the event creates awareness and encourages recycling efforts throughout the community, and ultimately, the world.

Lynne Manna, director of admissions at Berry College Elementary and Middle School, said the event will take place in the Krannert Center Ballroom and anyone of any age can design an outfit to enter into the contest. Each outfit must be made entirely out of recyclable materials. The entry fee is $5 for non-students and $2 for students. 

To go along with the three Rs of Reduce, Reuse and Recycle, Manna said instead of tickets, those attending the show can bring in a gently used winter coat. The coats will be donated to Action Ministries Rome.

The theme of this year’s show, she said, is plastic bottles, and there will be a plastic bottle sculpture contest. During the fashion show, the sculptures will be placed throughout the ballroom for decoration. 

“If someone doesn’t actually want to make an outfit or be on the runway, this is still a good way to be involved,” Manna said. “This is still a good way to make a sculpture out of plastic bottles.”

For those who make outfits for the competition, but don’t want to walk the runway, models will be provided, she said. In the past years there have been an average of 30 to 40 trashion designs displayed on the runway. 

Winners will receive cash prizes ranging between $25 and $50. Awards will be given out for categories such as most creative, most inspiring, best use of recyclable materials and a grand prize winner. 

Judges include Berry administrative staff, Joe Cook of CRBI, Eric Lindberg of the E.C.O. River Education Center and Nelle Reagan.
