SHORTER VOLLEYBALL

ROME -- Shorter welcomed Gulf South Conference member West Georgia to the Winthrop-King Centre and beat the Wolves in straight sets; 25-12, 30-28, 25-22.

Shorter got out to a quick lead after the first set, which saw the Lady Hawks hit .500. UWG would play tough in the next two sets, but Shorter would hold onto the victory. By the time the match concluded, the Lady Hawks hit an impressive .345 as a team.

Jasmine Crook was dominant at the net with 17 kills while hitting .462. Anna Graham was also a factor with her 12 kills and hitting .474 for the match.

Tanequa Whitman had 17 digs, while also adding three assists.

Jordan Corder racked up 47 more assists, including the final point of the match as she set up Crook to end the match.

Leslie Welch added nine kills, while Loren Olive added eight kills, one ace, and seven digs.

The Lady Hawks (13-2, 6-2 GSC) are on the road October 11 at Lee for a 7 pm start, before returning home for back-to-back GSC home matches. October 13 has a 1:30 pm start versus West Florida, which is a rematch of one of Shorter's losses this season. October 14 will see Valdosta State on the court of the Winthrop-King Centre at 3 pm; Shorter already has a 3-2 victory this season at VSU on September 13.

WOMEN'S SOCCER

University Field hosted the matchup between the Lady Hawks and the Wolves from West Georgia, with Shorter falling to its conference foe, 2-1.

West Georgia remains undefeated in Gulf South Conference play at 3-0-2 and stands third in the GSC. The Lady Hawks fall to 2-8-1 overall and 1-3-1 in league play.

West Georgia came out attacking strong in the first half with an early goal in the 17th minute on a header by Mariela Ortega, assisted by Anna Cusik to take a 1-0 lead in the game. Shorter was not able to get on the board in the first half, but it would not allow West Georgia another goal in the period.

The Lady Hawks went into halftime down 1-0, but would tie the game up in the second half on a goal by Aline Bez Tamiosso in the 62nd minute with an assist from Brandi Greenwald. The goal would be Tamiosso's second on the year to go along with Greenwald's second assist.

West Georgia would not wait much longer to make its attack on goal, scoring again in the 78th minute with a goal by Amalia Hernandez assisted by Rebecca Uranga to take a 2-1 lead late in the second half. The Lady Hawks would try to score in the last seconds on multiple shots, but would not be able to connect.

Katie Stachula was able to tally five saves and hold the UWG offense to only two goals.

The Wolves finished the game ahead in the shot count 18-14 and with more on goal attempt with eight to Shorter's seven.

Shorter will be back in action October 7 at Valdosta State University for a 2 pm matchup, before returning to Ben Brady Field on October 14 to face conference opponent North Alabama at 2 pm.
