A 24-year-old Summerville man was killed after his SUV left the road and struck a power pole early Monday morning near 3136 New Rosedale Road in Floyd County, according to police.

John William Patterson, of 2253 Silver Hills Road, died on the scene of the wreck said Floyd County Deputy Coroner Ernie Studard.

According to Floyd County police officer Jerome Poole:

Patterson was driving his white Ford Explorer eastbound on New Rosedale Road around 6:05 a.m. when it left the road and struck a power pole.

Police do not know why Patterson left the roadway but believe he may have fallen asleep.

His wrecked vehicle was discovered when his mother began calling police after Patterson did not show up for work.

Power was out near the site of the wreck for a short period of time.

A portion of the road was closed as crews repaired the power pole involved in the wreck.
