The National Alliance on Mental Illness stands by the message that “you are not alone” and mental illnesses can be treated with support and dedication.

The NAMI Rome affiliate will host its annual candlelight service today at First Baptist Church from 6 to 7 p.m.

This event will allow “people with mental illness and their families to feel the encouragement that is often missing from their lives” said local affiliate president Jim Moore. The service falls in the middle of the Mental Illness Awareness Week which occurs the first full week of October.

Rome will host its first NAMIWalk 11 a.m. Saturday at Georgia Highlands College and it’s not too late to donate or join at team. Registration begins at 10 a.m. This is the 10th year the NAMIWalks have taken place but the first for Rome.

These events take place every year in hopes that stigma surrounding mental illness will one day be erased.
