VOLLEYBALL

Berry College won at Hendrix College 3-2 (25-17, 25-27, 26-24, 21-25, 16-14) on Friday night. Junior Stephanie Quinn and freshman Emily Stromberg led the way for the Vikings.

Berry improved to 17-3, 11-1 in the Southern Athletic Association. Hendrix is now 10-14, 3-7.

Stromberg posted a match-high 20 kills and added 21 digs, and three service aces. Quinn passed for 61 assists and recorded 18 digs.

In the final set, the Vikings trailed 14-13 but evened the score with a kill by sophomore Gretchen Kaufman. Berry then got successive kills by sophomore transfer Anna Keappler to secure the win. Setter Quinn set up the final three points.

Katie Bates paced Hendrix with 16 kills.

"I couldn't be prouder of our team for staying composed on the road against a Hendrix team that pushed us with their tough serving," said Berry Head Coach Mika Robinson. "Credit Hendrix with solid ball control and some great defense, but we came up with big swings at critical times. The match will serve us well at the end of the season."

Berry travels to Memphis, Tenn., to face Rhodes on Saturday. First serve is 3 p.m. EST.

MEN'S SOCCER

Fueled by two second-half goals, Berry increased its win streak to three games as it defeated Southern Athletic Association opponent Sewanee, 2-0, on Friday afternoon at Ford Field.

Sophomore Zak Wallingford got things rolling when he headed in junior's Matt Majestic's corner kick at 73:38 for his third goal of 2012.

About six minutes later, junior Matt Seib later earned his first goal of the season at 79:53 off a pass from freshman Caleb Lucas. Lucas secured the ball, evaded several Tigers and found enough room to fire a left-footed shot.

Berry held Sewanee to three shots while managing to take 16. Freshman goalkeeper Logan Hill notched his seventh shutout of the season for the Vikings and made three saves. Jacob Zalewski took the loss for Sewanee and recorded six saves.

"It was a good, controlled header by Zak," said Berry Head Coach Richard Vardy. "And then the second goal was a quality finish by Matt Seib."

Berry upped its overall record to 10-3 and 3-1 in SAA competition. Sewanee dropped to 3-8-2 and 0-2-2.

The next game on Berry's schedule will be a crucial SAA matchup at Birmingham-Southern on Friday at 7 p.m. Currently Birmingham-Southern tops the SAA standings.

WOMEN'S SOCCER

Berry lost, 2-1, to Southern Athletic Association foe Sewanee on Friday afternoon at Ford Field. The Vikings, however, had the edge in shots, 16-9.

Sewanee got on the board first as the result of an own goal by Berry at 8:13. Leading 1-0 at halftime, Sewanee tacked on another score via a Jamie Samociuk corner kick that curved right into the goal at 56:13.

Berry did manage to score its first goal since Sept. 11. At 64:45 freshman Kari Detscher booted home the ball after receiving a pass from sophomore Cori Wagner.

Junior Blair Shupenko took the loss for Berry and made two saves. Olivia Glascoe tallied eight saves on her way to earning the win for Sewanee.

Berry's record now stands at 2-8-1 overall and 0-3-1 in SAA competition. Sewanee advances to 7-6 and 3-1.

"We gave up two of the weirdest goals that I've seen a long time," said Berry Head Coach Lorenzo Canalis. "One positive from this game is that the group is staying united."

Next Friday Berry will return to action when it travels to play Birmingham-Southern at 6 p.m.
