Shorter volleyball: Lady Hawks suffer first home loss

Haley Shackelford and Lindsay Homme led the West Florida Argonauts (13-6, 9-1 GSC) past the Lady Hawks (13-4, 6-3 GSC) in straight sets at the Winthrop-King Centre, 3-0. This was the second match up of the two teams this season, with West Florida taking the September decision in straight sets for Shorter's first loss of the season.

Jordan Corder recorded a double-double as she was able to tally 33 assists and 10 digs.

Anna Graham hit .370 and was tops for the Lady Hawks with 13 kills.

Jasmine Crook totaled 11 kills and nine digs, while Loren Olive added 13 digs for the match.

The Argos were able to outhit the Lady Hawks, .333 to .153.

Shorter lost the first two sets, 25-17 and 25-16, before staging a valiant effort in the third set. The final set was the most closely contested, with Shorter never more than four points behind. The Lady Hawks fought off match point twice and had two set point opportunities, but West Florida went to Shackelford for the final two kills to take the set and match 29-27.

Shackelford had 17 kills and 10 digs, while Homme added 16 kills. West Florida entered the game ranked 23rd according to the AVCA Division II Coaches Poll as the only Gulf South Conference team to appear in the rankings this season.

Shorter will host Valdosta State tomorrow at the Winthrop-King Centre at 3 pm. VSU (12-6, 5-4 GSC) is coming to Rome after a five set victory over West Georgia on Saturday.
