Floyd County Election officials were busy Monday as a steady stream of voters came out for the first day of early voting for the Nov. 6 general election.

The elections office reported that 488 people showed up to cast their ballot at the County Administration Building, 12 E. Fourth Ave.

County Elections Supervisor Evon Billups was excited by the turnout and said that the inclusion of the presidential election always brings out more voters than usual.

“We’re glad to see the turnout,” Billups said. “It means at least people are taking an interest in voting for whatever reason.”

Voters in Floyd County will also decide the 14th Congressional District seat, two County Commission posts, a county school board post, the sheriff slot, the clerk of court office and the 12th State House District seat.

“We kind of expected it to be like this,” Billups said. “We had a lot of people come in last week asking about early voting and we felt like we had a pretty good number that were going to come in.”

Early voting will continue through Nov. 2 on the second floor of the County Administration Building from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. during the week and from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 27.

A second universal polling precinct will open from Oct. 29-Nov. 2 in the Rome Civic Center on Jackson Hill.
