The Cherokee County Board of Education, during its Tuesday, Oct. 16 meeting, accepted the resignation of Brian Johnson as superintendent, Cherokee County Schools, effective immediately.

Don Stowe, chairman, Cherokee County Board of Education, who presided at the meeting, read Johnson’s letter of resignation. Johnson was not present at the meeting.

“I hereby resign as superintendent of Cherokee County Board of Education, effective immediately,” said Johnson in the letter. “I do not resign as an employee of Cherokee County Board of Education. I continue to assert my right to retain my highest tenured position as a teacher.”

The board voted to appoint an acting superintendent through Jan. 1, 2013 when the newly-elected superintendent will take office. Those interested in this position have until this Friday, Oct. 19, at noon, to submit their name to Deneen Jimmerson, the superintendent’s secretary.

The next meeting of the Cherokee County Board of Education is Monday, Oct. 22, at 8 a.m. at the board office.

Stowe said they will take up business which was supposed to be on Tuesday night’s agenda at the Monday meeting after appointing an acting superintendent.
