IT WAS GREAT TO SEE more than 300 participants turn out, better yet to learn more than $36,000 had been raised, in the first benefit walk held by the Rome branch of the National Alliance on Mental Illness. It was no surprise, though. This community has a far better grasp than most, even with Northwest Georgia Regional Hospital being closed by the state, of the magnitude and problems associated with this much misunderstood human problem.

The national NAMIWalk effort is now 10 years old and this was the first such held in Rome. Based on this initial outcome, it appears certain to become an annual event — one of a growing number of fund-raising and awareness-raising walks held locally.

Plainly Greater Romans know the meaning of the saying about “walking a mile in their shoes.” Perhaps that is because one of the origins of that saying is generally attributed to be from an old Cherokee proverb that must have rubbed off on current residents of the former Cherokee Nation.
