The Berry College Rho Upsilon Chapter of honor society Kappa Delta Pi recently received the Literacy Alive 2011-2012 Premier Achievement Award for their “Books and Book Bags” project at a low-income Rome elementary school.

The Berry chapter partnered with two Elm Street Elementary classes and provided books and personalized tote bags for the students to carry home to read. Thirty-three third graders participated in the project, learning how to care for books, and improve their literacy skills as they read inside and outside the classroom. Berry senior Sara Niemeir, of Woodstock, Ga., coordinated the project. The award included a check for $300.
