Shorter claimed the three sets; 25-21, 25-20, 25-23. Shorter was able to pull ahead in the first two sets after 13-13 ties, and establishing a 13-6 lead in the third set to claim the victory. This is the eighth straight sets win for the Lady Hawks this season.
The match ended the way many points this season have been scored, with an assist from Jordan Corder to Jasmine Crook registering the kill. Crook was able to accumulate 19 kills, while hitting .412 for the three set match. Corder added 33 assists to go along with 10 digs, representing a team high in each category.
The Lady Hawks (17-5, 7-4 GSC) claimed the victory despite being outhit for the match, .284 to .247, helped by the receiving errors of the Tigers defense.
Shorter also added four service aces; with Tanequa Whitman recording two, and Dena Pierce and Megan Pepe each adding one apiece.
Loren Olive and Anna Graham each contributed eight kills to the stat line. Whitman was able to add eight digs and Olive added another seven. For the match, Shorter had 37 digs to the 29 by the Tigers.
Shorter travels to Spring Hill for a 2 pm start tomorrow from Mobile, Ala. The Lady Hawks return to the state of Alabama on November 6 for a GSC match versus Alabama-Huntsville at 7 pm.
The Lady Hawks return home to the Winthrop-King Centre on November 8 when another GSC rival, Union, takes the court at 7 pm.
West Alabama deals Men's Soccer GSC loss, 2-0
LIVINGSTON, Ala. -- In a match up versus the second ranked team in the Gulf South Conference standings, the Hawks dropped a 2-0 decision at West Alabama.
West Alabama saw two goals scored on the home turf; Evan Beutler in the 28th minute and William Artiga in the 83rd minute, to claim victory at Tiger Stadium.
The Hawks (4-12, 3-7 GSC) were outshot by a 17-8 margin; however five of the eight shots were placed on goal forcing the Tigers goal keeper, Lavares Stone, to come up with saves on each shot attempt.
Austen Trevers got the road start for the Hawks in goal and was able to make four saves. Trevers now has 43 saves on the season, saving 67% of the shots he faces.
The Hawks offense was led by the two shots, both on goal, by Augusto Barreto; along with Irvin Espinal, Robert Ochieng, and Hayden Bell each registered one shot on goal apiece.
The Tigers were the aggressors in the second half, as they registered 12 of the 17 shots after the intermission.
The Hawks have one more match on the 2012 season, as they travel to Pensacola, Fla. on October 28 to take on West Florida, ranked No. 4 in the South Region of the NCAA regional rankings released on Wednesday.
