Senior Allie LeFeuvre started the scoring at 6:08, and fellow senior Alex Garza tacked on another at 37:52. Those goals left Berry with a 2-0 advantage at halftime.
In the second half, sophomore Cori Wagner booted home a score at 46:49. Junior Kim Fischer added another goal at 65:15, and senior Rachel Czyz capped the scoring with a breakaway goal at 84:54.
Junior Blair Shupenko earned the victory the Berry and made no saves. Her Oglethorpe counterpart, Bailey Evans, took the loss and made 17 saves.
Berry improved to 4-9-2 and 1-4-2 in Southern Athletic Association play.
Oglethorpe fell to 4-10 and 1-6.
Berry will wrap up its regular season at home on Tuesday afternoon against Covenant at 4 p.m.
LADY HAWKS SWEEP SPRING HILL
The Shorter volleyball team posted a 25-22, 29-27, 25-22 victory at Spring Hill College to improve 18-5 overall.
It was the ninth straight-set victory of the season for the Lady Hawks.
Jasmine Crook led the charge with 14 kills, while hitting .385 for the match. Leslie Welch was also strong, with 11 kills and hitting .474.
The Lady Hawks outhit their opponent .313 to .188.
Tanequa Whitman and Jordan Corder each recorded 14 digs. Corder added 39 assists, giving her 954 on the season, which represents four of the top six single-season efforts in school history.
Loren Olive chipped in 10 digs, with two more service aces to give her 28 on the season. Megan Pepe was also able to add nine digs to the stat line, one shy of her season high.
The first was tied at 15 before the lady Hawks were able to pull away for the victory. The second set went into extra points before Shorter was able to claim the set. The final set saw the Lady Hawks extend from a 10-10 tie to establish a lead that lasted until Corder assisted to Anna Graham to mark the final point of the match; the kill was Graham’s eighth of the day.
The Lady Hawks return to Alabama on Nov. 6 for a GSC match against Alabama-Huntsville at 7 p.m.
The Lady Hawks are back home on Nov. 8 to face GSC rival Union at 7 p.m.
JOHNSON LIFTS BERRY TO WIN
Kartee Johnson scored in the 90th minute to lift Berry over Oglethorpe, 2-1, at Ford Field on Saturday. David Shaw assisted on the game-winner.
The Vikings improved to 12-3-1 and 5-1-1 in SAA play. Oglethorpe dropped to 8-6 and 2-5 in conference.
The first half was scoreless. The visitors got on the scoreboard in the 51st minute. Nick Williamson tallied for the Stormy Petrels. Berry goalkeeper Logan Hill deflected the shot, but it still found the net. Hill had four saves for BC.
The Vikings evened the match in the 67th minute when Caleb Lucas scored.
Berry had 15 shots to 10 for OU. The Vikings led in corner kicks, 11-3.
Frank Petersen made eight saves for Oglethorpe.
Both teams will now prepare for the SAA Tournament, which begins next Friday in Birmingham.
BERRY VOLLEYBALL GOES UNBEATEN AT INVITATIONAL
The Berry volleyball team defeated Faulkner 25-20, 25-19, 25-16 to close play at the Berry Invitational unbeaten.
The Lady Vikings, who improved to 24-5, won the six-team tournament.
Berry’s Jenn Tinnell was the tourney MVP.
Berry got balance in its offensive attack as Emily Stromberg (11 kills), Kelsey Lochstampfor (10) and Katie O’Rourke all hit well. As a team, the Vikings hit .291 to .111 for the Eagles.
Stephanie Quinn dished 35 assists for BC and Jennifer Tinnell had 12 digs. Prior to the match, Quinn was recognized for her 3000th assist and Tinnell was the Vikings’ senior day honoree.
“Senior Night is always bittersweet,” Berry Hed Coach Mika Robinson said. “It is sweet to reflect on how far Jenn has come in her four years, but we will certainly miss her next year. She has had a tremendous senior year and has been such a critical part of our team’s success.
“So, it is quite fitting that she was named Tournament MVP in the last regular season tournament she will play in a Viking jersey.”
“It is always great to win a tournament championship,” Robinson added. “And it was fun to see every player on our team get an opportunity to contribute this weekend.
“They all work so hard every day in the practice gym, and I was proud of the consistently high level of play they brought the last two days.”
Berry now prepares for the inaugural Southern Athletic Association Tournament. The event begins Friday and ends Sunday. As the top seed, Berry hosts the event.
BERRY SWIMMING WINS TWO
Berry College opened Southern Athletic Association competition in a winning fashion, as the Vikings defeated Rhodes, 193-60, and edged Centre, 142-131.
“We had many great swims and an outstanding double conference win for the men, keeping them undefeated in dual meets,” said Head Coach Paul Flinchbaugh.
The men’s 400 medley relay set a new pool and school record of 3:39.81. Graydon McCrite, Jordan Linzie, Conor Monaghan and Jonathan Purdy were the members of the team.
A new 400 Free relay time of 3:17.41 was set by Marko Karaulic, Jonathan Purdy, Conor Monaghan and Cameron Grant.
McCrite also set a new pool standard in 100 backstroke (55.77).
Linzie swam a school record in noth the 100 breaststroke (1:01.18), and the 200 breaststroke (2:19.97).
In men’s 1-meter diving, Ben Myers set a new benchmark by scoring 101.43.
The Vikings swim at the Sewanee Invitational next Saturday.
