Savannah city officials are gathering Tuesday in Chippewa Square to celebrate winning this year's the top honor from the nonprofit Georgia Urban Forestry Council.
The Outstanding Community Grand Award recognizes recent work by Savannah's Park and Tree Department to install new brick walkways, plant new trees and shrubs and install Victorian benches in the square.
Chippewa Square is one of the most popular in Savannah's downtown historic district. Known for its use in the 1994 film "Forrest Gump" starring Tom Hanks, the square is also home to the city's statue-topped monument to Georgia's founder, British Gen. James Edward Oglethorpe.
