The man was shot by another hunter, identified as a 22-year-old from Cisco, according to Capt. Johnny Johnson of the Department of Natural Resources. He said he did not have the names of the men and the man’s condition was not known.
“They were both walking at the time but not together,” Johnson said.
The shooting is under investigation but did not appear to be intentional.
Both men were wearing safety clothing, Johnson said.
DNR officials, Floyd County Police, Redmond Regional Medical Center Emergency Medical Services and the Rome-Floyd Fire Department were staged on U.S. 27 south just south of Armuchee Church of God.
Hunting is a safe sport but “when you have an injury, it’s more serious,” Johnson said.
Anyone born after Jan. 1, 1961, must take a hunter education course taught by DNR officials before they can obtain a hunting license, which costs $18 for a two-year license or $10 for a one-year license.
Hunters are also told to wear 500 square inches of florescent orange above the waistline, Johnson said.
“But the biggest thing we stress is common sense,” he said.
Deer hunting season with firearms began on Oct. 20 and ends Jan. 1 in the northern part of the state and Jan. 15 in the southern part of the state.
Hunting is allowed from 30 minutes before sunrise to 30 minutes after sunset.
