Four local swimmers from Three Rivers Swim Club (TRSC) recently qualified for the Georgia Short Course State Meet, to be held February 22-24, 2013, at Georgia Tech.

At the recent Chattahoochee Gold Meet in Cumming Lucas Grigat, 9, qualified for his first state meet in the 9-10 boys 100 yard freestyle.

Viola Hasko and Samson Mumber, each age 11, will both return to State in at least two events. Hasko qualified in the 11-12 girls 50 and 100 yard breaststroke and Mumber in the 11-12 boys 50 and 100 yard backstroke.

A.J. Williams, Jr., swimming in his first meet as an 11 year old, will return to State in the 400 yard individual medley, an event in which he will compete against senior swimmers several years older than he is.

TRSC swimmers scored multiple Top 10 finishes at the meet. Lucas Grigat, in the 9-10 boys division, earned top spots in six events: 100 IM (fifth), 50 breaststroke (sixth), 100 and 200 freestyle (seventh), 50 freestyle (fifth), and 50 butterfly (10th). Tullis, 8, also finished high up in six events: 25 freestyle (second), 100 freestyle (fifth), 25 backstroke (sixth), 50 freestyle (sixth), and 50 breaststroke (sixth), and 50 butterfly (10th).

Luciano Hasko, 10, had five Top 10 finishes in his division: 50 freestyle (4th), 50 breaststroke (fifth), 100 backstroke (eighth) and 50 butterfly (eighth), and 50 backstroke (ninth). Mumber did similarly well in the 100 backstroke (third), 50 Backstroke (fifth), and 200 Freestyle (10th).

Viola Hasko placed 2nd in the 50 breast and third in the 100 breaststroke in the 11-12 girls. A.J. Williams Jr. placed 9th in the 100 breaststroke and the 200 freestyle in the 11-12 boys age group.

At this first meet of the 2012/2013 short course season, all twenty of the TRSC racers posted personal best times.

In the girls division, Jane Tullis earned nine; Sarah Baker eight; Viola Hasko and Madelyn Mavrakos each seven; Maya Williams six; Momoka Issi and Anna Waguespack each four; Melinda Childs, Sofie DeWandel, and Alexia Fowler, each three.

Among the TRSC boys Samson Mumber achieved seven personal bests; Samuel Bryant, Lucas Grigat, Nicolas Grigat, Zack LeMaster, Sam Tullis, each had six; Luciano Hasko four; A.J. Williams, James Stevens two each; and Lucas Baker one.

Hasko, Mumber and Williams, who all placed in the Top 20 in their age group in multiple events at the summer championships, hope to finish well at the winter championships in February 2013. Grigat and others will be there with them. Meanwhile, Lemaster, in the Senior division, is near state qualifying times in multiple events.

TRSC has at least three more swim meets on the schedule. TRSC coach Brooks Coville expects the seasoned swimmers to achieve state cuts on other events as well, and rising swimmers to start making their first cuts. The next meet for TRSC is the Martha Bass Invitational at Baylor in Chattanooga Nov. 10-11.

TRSC swimmers train up to six days a week, splitting their time between the Rome High pool and Floyd Medical Center gym.
