A 60-percent chance of rain forecast for Election Day is unlikely to dampen the spirits of Floyd County voters.

Showers are most likely before the polls open at 7 a.m. Tuesday, according to the National Weather Service, although the day is expected to remain cloudy with temperatures in the low 50s.

Nearly a third of the county’s registered voters — 14,365 people — took advantage of the early voting period, which ended Friday.

That 30.45 percent falls a little short of the 38.43 percent who came out in advance for the 2008 presidential election, but local officials are confident there will be a healthy turnout.

“I’d say 70 percent easy,” Elections Board Chairman Pete McDonald said.

Elections Supervisor Evon Billups said thousands of absentee ballots also were requested, so turnout could be as high as 80 percent, depending on how many of them are returned.

The number of registered voters in Floyd County has been increasing, but the percentage who vote appears to be decreasing.

Turnout was about 73 percent in 2008 compared to 77 percent for the 2004 presidential election.

Still, enthusiasm is running high this year, as evidenced by the voter rolls. According to Georgia secretary of state reports, Floyd County had 46,025 registered voters as of Oct. 1 and 47,169 as of Nov. 1 — an increase of more than 1,100 people.

Topping the ballot is the presidential race between President Barack Obama, a Democrat, and his challengers Republican Mitt Romney and Libertarian Gary Johnson.

There also are eight certified write-in candidates, which means those votes will be counted and announced.

The candidates are Rocky Anderson of the Justice Party; Virgil Goode of the American Constitution Party; independents David C. Byrne, Darrell Hykes, Erin Kent Magee and Jill Reid; James Harris of the Socialist Workers Party; and Jill Stein of the Green Party.
