Walmart reported taking in nearly $3,000 in counterfeit money over the weekend, and police are also investigating two other incidents regarding counterfeit bills.

According to Rome police reports:

Police responded to Walmart on Redmond Circle in the early hours of Saturday morning, where the store manager reported 147 counterfeit bills from one register in the electronics department.

Police seized the fake currency of seven $10 bills, four $50 bills and 136 $20 bills, which added up to $2,990.

The manager of the store told the officer she and the employees were counting the registers from the previous night’s transactions and discovered the counterfeit bills.

She told the officers that a male customer had made three large transactions where the clerk deposited about $1,000 on three green dot debit cards. The transactions happened at 11:15 p.m., 11:17 p.m. and 11:21 p.m.

The manager said the clerk did not know it was the store’s policy to check $20 bills. Police seized the fake money at the scene for evidence and also saw a surveillance video of the suspect.

Just hours previously, police seized $35 in fake currency in the form of seven $5 bills from the YMCA located on Second Avenue on Friday night.

A YMCA employee reported receiving a fake $5 bill from a male subject who was attempting to purchase a set of headphones.

The subject told the officer that he and a friend had gone to the South Rome area earlier that day to buy drugs. The subject’s friend gave the drug dealer a $100 bill and received change back and the change included the seven counterfeit $5 bills, which the officer seized.

Later that same night, a cashier at the Kangaroo Express, 1425 Turner McCall Blvd., told police she was given a fake $20 bill.

The cashier said she saw a man outside the store ask another man if he had change for a $20 bill. The man said he did not, but took the bill from the first man and entered the store. The cashier gave him three $5 bills and five $1 bills. He exited the store and gave the money to the first man, who left.

When the cashier checked the $20, she determined it was counterfeit.

Police entered all of the counterfeit money into evidence at the Rome Police Department.
