The freezing temperatures did not keep motorcycle riders from around the state from taking a tour from Cave Spring to Rome for a good cause on Sunday.

The Freedom Seekers motorcycle club held their Toys for Tots ride, leaving from Cave Spring’s Rolater Park around 1 p.m. and ending the ride at the Coosa Valley Fairgrounds.

Riders had to bring a toy to be donated to Toys for Tots.

While it was a sunny Sunday, the temperatures were very cold.

Denny Forester of Fort Oglethorpe set out in 27-degree weather to bring a Tonka truck.

Jimmy Hutcheson brought several toys, including a Barbie doll with several dresses and a toy truck with a trailer.

“He’s like Santa Claus,” Forester said.

Hutcheson and Forester are members of the Sons of Confederate Veterans.

About 121 bikes participated, according to Darron Stowe, the Freedom Seekers organizer. Some of the riders came from as far away as Tifton, about a 280-mile ride, he said.

“We want to make these other guys that came so far away to be seen in their community as well,” Stowe said.

A full bin of toys was collected and some riders gave money, Stowe said.

Toys for Tots provides toys for needy children in Floyd, Chattooga and Polk counties.

Toy drop-off locations are scattered around the county, including at Floyd Medical Center’s main lobby, banks and credit unions, IHOP, Walmart and Kmart. Donations also are accepted online at rome-ga.toysfortots.org, where the full list of collection points is posted.

Next week the Freedom Seekers will return the favor to the riders who came to help them. They will participate in Toys for Tots rides in Tifton on Saturday and in Columbus on Sunday.
