The Atlanta Journal-Constitution Tuesday reported the employee stole the money by submitting fraudulent invoices over the past five years.
Woodruff Arts Center officials say the employee left his job in October, and administrators opened an investigation into suspicious invoices days after his departure.
The former employee's identity has not been disclosed, and formal charges have not yet been filed against him. The worker is identified only as a mid-level administrator.
Woodruff president and CEO Virginia Hepner told the newspaper the former employee acknowledged culpability when he was presented with the findings of an internal investigation.
Woodruff Arts Center officials say auditors have been hired to increase oversight at the institution.
