Maryville College used a 15-0 run in the second half to pull away and defeat Berry College’s men’s basketball team, 83-75, at The Cage Center on Monday night. Jonathan Abrams netted a game-high 21 point for the Vikings.

Maryville improved to 3-3. The Vikings, which dropped their fourth straight contest, fell to 1-4.

Abrams was 8-13 from the field and made 5-6 free throws. Also scoring in double digits for Berry were freshman Lee McCloud (season high 12 points), Lake Graham (11) and Mac Whalen (10).

“We shared the ball and shot well tonight,” said Viking Head Coach Jeff Haarlow. “Maryville had been struggling with their shooting, but they shot well, too. We had trouble responding to their runs, and need to do a better job with our perimeter defense.”

Berry was 27-49 (55 percent) to Maryville’s 51-percent (30-59). The Scots, however, had 11 three-point baskets to five for the Vikings.

Maryville held a 54-49 lead with 10 minutes left in regulation. Maryville then outscored the home club 15-0 over the next 3:26 to create a big lead.

The Scots held a 38-34 edge at the break. In the first half, the Scots shot 50-percent (15-30) to Berry’s 9-20 (45-percent). The visitors made seven three-pointers to Berry two. The Vikings, however, netted 12-13 free throws to Maryville’s 2-2.

The visitors boasted balanced scoring with five players scoring in double figures. Wes Lambert, Christian Ford and Jaumonee Byrd all collected 13 points for MC.

The 75 points scored by Berry was a season-high. The previous high was 59 in the season-opener vs. Covenant.

Berry returns to action on Wednesday when the Vikings travel to Point University in West Point.

Just two days removed from a big win on the road in Alabama, the Georgia Northwestern Lady Bobcats made a return trip to the Heart of Dixie Monday night to take on Snead State in an 86-59 loss.

Big post play from Lady Cats Odessa Person and Terika Mostella helped the freshman-heavy roster stay close for a while. Person’s 10 points and 10 boards and Mostella’s 14 points and six boards led the way for Georgia Northwestern on the night.

However, it was the effort of Lady Parson Bianca Bothwell and her 18 points that put Snead State (7-3) over the top.

Georgia Northwestern (4-5) would go 15-of-23 from the charity strip in the road loss Monday. The Covenant Scots come to call at the Winthrop-King Center on Wednesday night to challenge the Lady Cats on their home court.
