ALBANY, Ga. (AP) — Federal authorities say a Sumter County commissioner has been convicted in corruption case after he solicited and accepted bribes.

The U.S. Department of Justice Tuesday announced Al J. Hurley, of Americus, was found guilty of attempted extortion and federal program bribery.

Officials say the 54-year-old commissioner promised to help award county contracting work to private contractors in exchange for money.

Authorities say Hurley faces a maximum of 20 years in prison for the attempted extortion charge, and 10 years in prison for bribery. Each charge also carries a maximum of $250,000.

A sentencing date has not been set.
