Former Armuchee standout Sierra Smith found her rhythm from beyond the arc once again. Going 6-for-13 from three-point range, Smith’s biggest two shots found their mark in the final ten seconds of the game.
Georgia Northwestern’s win against the Lady Bison is the college’s first-ever win over a Division I program in the NJCAA.
The Lady Cats (6-5) next play a charity match against Mid-South College at the Rossville Athletic Complex. On Dec. 11, both the men and women teams from Georgia Northwestern will take part in the college’s Toy Drive games. Fans can get in free with every new toy donated to the drive at the gate. All donations will go to North Georgia’s Stocking Full of Love Toy Drive held every year at the holidays.
SHORTER WOMEN’S BASKETBALL
For the second time this season, the Lady Hawks will take on the Lady Panthers from Clark Atlanta today, this time on the road. Shorter won the contest on Nov. 26 in the Winthrop-King Centre, 64-61.
The prior match-up saw Maggie Peeples drain an open 3-pointer to break a tie late in the game to put the Lady Hawks ahead for good. Shorter led most of the categories, including Kristin Nash as the top scorer with 17 points, and Shelby Farrer gathering 13 rebounds.
Karisma Boykin and Peeples each dished out four assists, on the way to the Lady Hawks totaling 15 assists for the game. The Lady Hawks also registered a season high 13 offensive rebounds while visiting the free throw line 31 times, making 19.
For the season, Boykin is the top scorer with 14.8 points per game, followed closely by Lynette Harris who is scoring 12.8. Boykin is also leading the team with 3.4 assists per game. Farrer is averaging 9.2 rebounds per game, with 2.8 coming on the offensive glass.
SHORTER MEN’S BASKETBALL
The Shorter men’s basketball team will travel to Clark Atlanta for a 4 p.m. tip-off today. The game will be the first of match-ups in the month of December between the two teams, with Shorter hosting the Dec. 29 game.
The Hawks (5-2) are coming off of their second loss of the season, this time to the Gulf south Conference in-state rival of West Georgia, 78-63.
The game saw C.J. Davis score 13 points in the second half, on his way to a team-high 19. Anthony Banks and Dedric Ware both registered individual game-highs in the loss; Banks with eight rebounds and Ware with six assists. Shorter was undone by turnovers, and the ability of West Georgia to score off of the mistakes.
Davis is leading the team in scoring at 16 points per game, with Banks right behind him at 15. Ware tops the Hawks with 5.0 assists per game. Banks leads the team in rebounds (8.0) and field goal percentage (61.1), while Brandon Wright is converting 50 percent of his 3-point attempts.
Clark Atlanta (0-5) will be looking to get the first win of the season in what will be just the second home game of the season for the Panthers. Jermille Fluker is the top scorer at 21.0 points, with Dwayne Bingham pulling in 8.3 rebounds per game.
