The cost of providing meals to Chattooga County inmates will increase nearly 27 percent in 2013.

Sole Commissioner Jason Winters said bids opened last week show the cheapest price for two meals a day came from the current provider, Pop’s Place.

Owner James McNew submitted a bid of $6.96 per inmate, per day. Pop’s Place is currently providing the service at $5.49 per inmate.

“We wished the price would have been lower,” Winters said. “We will most likely go with the low bid.”

The contract will be for a year. The only other bid came from Bonnie’s Family Restaurant in Menlo, which offered to do the work for $7.70 per inmate, per day.

Although Winters wanted a lower bid, he said he understands that the cost of food continues to increase and preparing two meals a day for a year is a big commitment.
