The Lady Eagles, who won their second straight Class AA championship in November, will be honored tonight at the NAIA Championship game. It will be the second straight year the Coosa squad has been recognized at the title game.
“It’s very exciting,” said Coosa coach Beth Nichols. “It’s an honor that they think of us, like to recognize us and have us there. The girls were thrilled and we’re going to enjoy ourselves.”
The state title was Coosa’s third in the last five years.
The most recent one may have been the most surprising, considering the Lady Eagles had a young team after the departure of six seniors from the 2011 championship squad.
“It’s been amazing,” said Nichols. “I guess it’s meant a little bit more this year since it was such an accomplishment having to overcome losing so many seniors.
“That makes it that much more meaningful,” added Nichols.
Team members include: Debresha Haselrig, Alex Cescutti, Alexia Burns, Taylor Chambers, Leah Early, Shannah Hammons, Josie Perry, Caroline Shepherd, Rachel Waters, Triston Casteel, Savannah Gay, Caroline Hubbard, Charity McFather, Talyn Murphy, Raven Ayer, Abigail Ayers, Hope Langston.
